340S trail rider?

Post by 400brian »

After running a tank of gas through the 340S, it is VERY apparent that in its current configuration it will not make the best trail rider.

The fuel consumption is such that the range is a tad limited.

My feeling is that the gearing is optimized for top speed, and at trail speeds the engine is totally out of the power band. I have said often that it doesn't run well at 25 mph, but requires a lot of throttle, 1/2 - 3/4 to run at that speed. Let it spool up to 40 mph, and it's heading for 60 in a heart beat!

The sled currently has the standard gear set in it, which according to the owners manual, puts the final drive at 2.29 - 1.

My X8 has great low end performance, and demonstrated good fuel economy at the HOF ride in Feb. It has a final drive stated as 2.05 - 1.

The 340S parts book lists 5 gear sets:

Standard: 2.29 - 1
2.05 - 1
2.18 - 1
2.43 - 1
2.62 - 1

I'm wondering how far I'd have to go to pull the sweet spot down to trail speeds?

Rich

I understand what you are saying.

However, the one Troy has seems to want to pull the skis, the one I am riding absolutely does not.

I don't figure that it will make a granny rider with the kids, I would like to get more than 30 miles on a tank of gas.
