Trailfire 340 Bogging Problem

Post by Deleted User »

This is a follow-up to a problem I posted on the original JD Board before it crashed.

The Symptoms: Trailfire 340 would bog big time off the line, but then just take off after about 20-30 seconds of bogging with the throttle pinned.

The Suggestions Given: Clean Carb, Replace jets, Adjust fuel/idle mixture, Increase idle, Check Piston Wash, Check Spark Plug Color - All valid assuming the problem was carburetor!

The REAL SOLUTION: Replace Broken Spring in Primary Clutch (Comet 102c)

The Message: Don't assume a bogging problem is carburetor related!

Trailfire 340 Bogging Problem

Well about 75% of the bog problems on this JD board ARE carb related, & not knowing what you already did to diognos the problem we assumed that you had checked the obvious things like belt or clutching, guess that's our fault for assuming!
Thanks for letting us know what the real problem was, we all learn from from feed back

I've seen a lot of broken springs, but how does it create the problem that you had? My X8 has the exact problem, 30 seconds of bogged down riding then it opens up and you have to hold on for dear life. I really don't understand how the spring could cause this but I'll probably check it now.

A broken spring in the primary will cause it to engage too early because it's now shorter than it should be and will engage too far before the engine rpm's are high enough for the load, it makes sense that it would bog.

I wondered all along, because my problem was only off the line... if I was slowing down and was able to keep my rpm's up by feathering the throttle, and then pinned it, it would respond fine.

For almost any John Deere sled, I think it is reasonable to expect the springs in the clutches to be weak, to say the least - They quit making sleds in '84, so they're all at least 22 years old now!

The worst part was waiting for a puller and then finding out that I had to order a spring to boot...

By the way, I think the primary had never been apart, because even my impact wouldn't take it off - I had to put some oil in the threads before the puller and then she popped right off - Thanks to whoever posted that on the original forum!

Anyway, now she truly runs like a Deere!

Hey thanks on the follow up. You just put something in my head that was kinda there but never took the time to look. Ive been having a bad bog problem on my newer cat and I have overlooked the obvious as we all can sometimes.

For you guys really in the know on clutches would a similar primary problem in addition to the bog make you loose top speed and rpms at wide open. Surely Im thinking it will but just asking. Ive spent more than my share of time working on sleds and getting them running etc. But honestly as far as clutches and clutching goes I am a complete rookie.

Thanks again 2deeresleds for turning the light bulb on for me. Cant wait to check into this on the weekend. Was riding the sled around a feild with no helmet yesterday trying something out and swore I heard a not always there tinging sound coming from the clutch area bet Im gonna find something worn or broke in there.
