Running multiple CDI boxes
I have multiple CDI boxes and am planning on installing them both on my 340/S project. How is the proper way to install these? I'm assuming that both units were all wired up and all you had to do was unplug the one unit and plug in the three leads to the second unit and you were good to go? Can they both be grounded to the same place? I have one good used working unit and one new rebuilt unit. I don't want to do anything wrong that would damage either one.
Thanks,
Troy
Thanks,
Troy

Troy, Mount it anywhere that you can plug in the wires easily with out adding or cutting wires. Also make sure that if you don't mount it to the motor that you have a good ground wire FROM the motor to the second box..

Kenny, I planned on mounting them back to back in the original location. The stock wiring harness will reach both units this way.
I'm thinking I will need to fabricate a heat shield to protect the outside mounted unit from the expansion chamber heat. Am I thinking right or just making extra work for myself?

OK, seriously here's my mocked up version of how I plan to do it. The heat shield is a Cyclone coil bracket that just happens to have the high energy warning label.............how cool is that.

Older Chevy V-8's ( 60's to maybe early 80's) used a ground strap from the valve cover bolts to??? (I think the intake manifold too long ago to remember where they went) & most mechanics removed them, so a salvage yard or old garage might have a bunch of these laying around..

DA,
The original CDI box that came on my sled has one white plug just like yours. However mine is covered in grunge! The second box which is a rebuilt unit has the plugs just a little closer also like your second unit.
I like the heatshield! The warning stickers are a added bonus.
We have a local farm store called Rural King. They have different length braided ground cables real close to the factory originals. Maybe I can get lucky and find one real close.

With heat being an enemy of electronics, I have wondered why some cooling air wasn't directed at this area.
The later hoods have some vent holes cut into the right hand side above the riders knee, I wonder if that helped reduce under-hood temps at all?
Good work Don, I have been pondering the same issue. I'd love to route some cooling air via scat hose toward the cdi boxes, but I don't know where to locate the intake. I'm not interested in cutting any holes in the hood or pan.

Great topic. I was thinking about dual CDIs on the Sportfire, although I'll have to come up with something different since it was mounted right on the engine.

If you ran the dual filler tank on the 340/S it leaves the original gas filler hole vacant in the hood. You might be able to run a hose from inside the filler hole in the hood down to the cdi units. At speed I would think it would generate some air flow down to the cdi boxes.
Hum! Anybody have a dual filler tank they want to part with?
