340/s crank seals and other misc parts

Post by jdsledhead »

hey guys, well I am getting into my new 340/s and I want to freshen it up. I have NOS head and base gaskets, but I need exhaust, intake, and crank seals. Do any of those parts cross to normal production models? say a 78 340 cyclone? If not where can I source up some gaskets and seals?
I am also looking for some hood pins, are they about the same as a hotrod pin or do I need to post in the classifieds?
Next, what gas caps are used on these tanks, does anyone have a current deere number to get it from the dealer, or is there a kelch replacement?
Finally,- does anyone have the part number (manufacturing factory) for the jackshaft and drive axle bearings? If someone has the number off a the bearing that should work fine. I can source a lot of different bearings from ebay bulk if you have a valid number.
Thanks for any and all help!

Tim:

The jackshaft bearings and drive bearings are both available thru John Deere. The jackshaft bearing number is JD 8562 (2 used) and the driveshaft bearings are JD 8665 (also 2 used). I would suggest at least one U42111 O-ring as well for the chaincase side lower bearing. These bearings are pretty common and probably can be purchased other places. I just prefer using my JD dealer when I can.

The original gas caps said something like "Premium Fuel Only" and I think they're as scarce as hen's teeth. I just bought two new ones from a local lawn mower shop that are used on Toro mowers. They work just fine, just dont' look as cool as the originals.

It's funny that you have the base gaskets, that seems to be the hardest gasket to get. I'm in the process of making some. Both the PTO seal and Mag side seals are available from various places i.e. Central Snowmobile/ATV.

I've researched the hood pins and believe that they can be bought via a speed shop and made to work. What I can't find is a 6" cable with a round (ball shaped) end. Anyone??

Tim,

The bearings from my jack shaft and drive sprocket shaft are NDH brand. NDH 100 & NDH 014.

The seals I have in my engine kit are 25 x 62 x 8 and 30 x 62 x 8.

The gas caps are Kelch but do not have a part number on them.

I've also looked the hood pins in the speed shops.
DA- what about a small fishing slip shot for the cable end?

I have purchased these short lanyard cables from MCM for use on other brands.
I do not have a 340/ S so I do not know if they would be correct for the machine.
If they are the same as Rupp than they match.

Tim

I'll add that the original hood pins were aluminum, but they wore rapidly, so Deere replaced them with steel pins.

These seals can be ordered from numerous places using the sizes listed, Napa, Arctic Cat, Yamaha, any motorcycle shop, a bearing wholesaler, ECT.
Order NEW seals don't order 30+ year old Deere seals that have set on the self as your taking a chance on them being brittle..

MCM is McMaster-Carr in Chicago IL.

www.mcmaster.com is the website.
fantastic search engine.
type in ...lanyard

No minumum order and cheap shipping
They also have a 4000 plus page catolog but only send it to Commercail/industrial customers. Web site is better anyway.

I buy rivets, odd-ball hardware and fasteners from them.
And they carry the vintage red handle bar grips that Scorpion used back in the late 60's. :)

T-roy I tried that but the cable kept pulling out. Still seems like a good idea, perhaps I should try again. DA

MCM also has the hood pins and in Stainless Steel.

Tim,

I stopped at Tri State bearing today and they measured the bearings and sold me these Timken #'s RA100RRB + COL AG & RA014RRB + COL AG. They came with the locking collar that you don't use.
