The clutch that came off my cyclone has the cover can on it. I notice that he new 102-c's do not have it on them. should I leave it off or does this model need it? Are there any advantages or disadvantages?

If I remember correctly, the 102C with the "can" had a cover plate (the part that contains the outer bushing) made of aluminum. When the can was eliminated in about 1977 (?) on Cyclones & Liquifires, this part was changed to steel. Good idea to get rid of the can, buy the steel part with new bushing, get more air flow though the clutch, clutch & belt runs cooler for longer life.

Guy is right, you can and should remove the "can" to promote clutch cooling. I don't think you need to change the cover plate if its in good shape. I know the 75 340/s with 102-C had an aluminum end plate with the bushing in it, but I am not sure about the 76's.

# 9: AM53940 used up to serial # 70,000. It did not have the extra primary guard
AM54301 was used from serial # 70,001 up
# 11 M66960 was the optional primary guard which was revited or welded on AM53940
I found out that you cannot sub AM54301 for AM53940 without modification since the front mounting is different.

thanks harley, it completely slipped my mind about looking at the parts diagrams on jdparts.
how prone were these clutches to flying apart? I have no problem with fabricating the guard. it will help pass the time till the snow is on the ground.
I can see it now(with a four inch piece of clutch buried three inches into my forehead) "boy I wish I put the clutch guard on that the boys told me about".
