340S tie rods

Post by 400brian »

Guys, carefully examine and consider replacing the tie rods on your sleds.

I've taken them off both sleds now, I didn't like the looks of either set. They had play in them, and had rough spots in them when you moved the stud around. The body of the rod end has a nylon insert that the ball/stud moves in. That nylon bearing is 33 years old, mine looked old, dry, and brittle. If that nylon bearing breaks and falls out of the rod end body, the body will fall off the ball. At that point, you are going to have steering failure!
ouch!

OK, here is what it looks like.

First photo is the original

Second photo is the newly fabricated 340S tie rod.
The ends are seal master, the adjuster is new, the body is 6061 aluminum rod ( polished ) the only thing I re-used is the jam nuts.

I have no idea what you have into making a set of these Brian but the parts are available from MCM.

The parts are available from any number of sources. The most expensive part is the rod ends. Troy and I each got them through Motion Industries, but Troy got his for significantly less $$. Mine are all metal, and cost around $13 ea. Troy's have a derilin insert, and cost around $8. Troy's are suposed to be the heavy duty ones! I do not know which might be better, but I doubt either of us will ever wear them out.

The adjuster bolts could be an issue if you cannot re-use your old ones,. Central and MS have dropped the supplier. However, they are an Arctic Cat part, so shouldn't be a problem.

So far nothing I have done on this thing has been easy or cheap! :lol22:

I may have gotten the rod ends cheaper but I'm sure Brian got a better deal on the aluminum rod.

Here's the info on what I have:

Ends came from Motion Industries.
Seal Master CTMD-6-Y (Male end) $8.13 ea.
Seal Master CTFDL-6-Y (Female end) $7.61 ea.

Alloy 7075 Aluminum 5/8" x 3' rod.
McMaster Carr #9063K17 3' $29.26

I was able to clean up and reuse my old adjusters. I bought new 3/8"x 24 fine thread lock nuts and jamb nuts at our local Menards store.

I might suggest a jam nut on the one side I just think that will keep any wobble from forming over use.

Kenny

Point taken. Troy made his a little shorter so he could use a jam nut on the handlebar end.

If you look at the original rods, that end was swaged. I'm going to use green locktite on mine, which is practically like welding it.

I may use low-strength locktite on the adjuster end as well, with jam nuts.

The green "sleeve Retainer" type will defiantly do the trick. I'm not so sure that I would use any at all on the other end, as if you happen to hit something (God forbid) & need to adjust out on the trail you might not get it to break loose..

Along with the tie rod end replacement I've noticed my 340/S has a significant amount of play in the main stering shaft in the tunnel. When you turn the handlebars you can see the shaft jump before the skis ever move. There are plastic bushings in the top and bottom of the tunnel that the steering shaft rides in. I've thought about cutting some brass shim stock and wrapping the outside of the both plastic bushings to help reduce the amout of play in the steering shaft.

Anybody got any other ideas on this one?

As I am not fortunate enough to own a 340/S nor have I every worked on one, I do not know what they used for spindle bushings.
But I do know that MCM carries bushings in every size and material that you can think of.

If someone has a 340/S that they are tired of tripping over let me know.

Todd

The plastic bushings in these are really thin.
