does anybody know how to check reed valves? or do you just replace if in question.

Andy,
To check the reed valves, first remove the intake manifold, then remove the reed cages. Inspect the reeds for warpage. The allowable "hang open" gap is up to 0.060. They should be able to close with very light finger pressure. If you take the tiny screws out that hold the reeds to the cage, always use locktite when re-installing them.

does the clymer manual give this type of info or just deere specified manuals?

All stated info was found in the John Deere service manual. These are still available.
