Ok, so working on this '74 John Deer J400D 340cc sled and the one coil is shot, I have a 70's snow prince sled that's seized so useless, but I took one of those coils from it and tested it on the JD and had good spark, so points are good, plug wires work, JD coil is pooched.
Can I Maguiver this coil in instead of the JD's? Will it run hotter and cook a piston or should it work alright? Anyway I can test the coils to figure out how close they are to the same?
The owner of the sled doesn't really care and doesn't want to put much money if any into this sled, so he'd like to use the other coil. I'm worried it may work for awhile.. but...

as far as Im concerned a coil is a coil aslong as it works and your not worried about being original.

Andy is right.
It is not too hot of a spark that will burn an engine down.

Unfortunately I just discovered that while the function of the coil may be the same, the outward appearance is important. I planned on using some new coils from a Cyclone on my 340/S but the plug wire comes out of the coil in a different location making it not workable in a 340/S. DA

If your ever really in a pinch for coil mounting you can use bosch style used on early model ski doos they have two wires so you just attach the ground side to the engine someplace the coil can then be mounted to anything even plastic since it is grouned through a wire not the mount. These also have screw in plug wires so you can make any length wire you need to fit your mounting location. I actually have a set of these wired up with aligator clips and long plug wires I use for testing on almost any old sled.

the only problem you may have is some coils are 5 ohm and some are 3.22 ohms, the 5 ohm coils are for points and the others are for electronic ignitions I think. I would think that if both have points you should be ok but your not supposed to mix the to
