NOS Parts

Post by JDGuy »

Does anyone know the story of how the Deere NOS parts became scattered among the various distributors of today? Some at Image, some at Dennis Kirk, CPC, etc. Polaris had them all right after the buyout, then..............??????? Seems I remember hearing many years ago that Image bought all the Polaris stock of Deere parts, but apparently not?

Here is my two cents, if the dealership closed before the buy out by Polaris, there is parts left behind, though not enough to make a major differance like what we are seeing like you mentioned, i know there are still dealerships with parts on hand, i personaly know of two in our area that still have parts, i have been alowed to take a look at one of them, not a bad inventory , I asked about selling it, he said not just yet, it wont be a cheap investment.
thanks for this site, one of the better sites to speak up about sleds.

I don't know how Image and CPC ended up with all of the nos parts that they have sold or still have, but it is my understanding(I could be wrong) that Parts Unlimited aquired the nos parts from Polaris. Dennis Kirk is a mail order / interenet dealer of Parts Unlimited. DK-Trader( from ebay), is a division of Dennis Kirk trying to sell off what is left of the nos john deere parts thru ebay.

Hey Guys,

Pat is pretty much correct. After Polaris bought Deere out, they had a 5 year contract to supply parts. At the end of that, Polaris supposidly sold everything to Parts Unlimited. The only thing I can figure is they must have sold various piles of inventory to the other companys, like CPC, ect. Just not sure. Image does have a fair amount of Deere parts from what I am told, but my guess is they were getting them from P/U.

When Deere stopped selling sleds in Feb of 84, they instructed the dealers to return the parts to Deere & Co. But, there was not a 100% credit given, only like 50 or 25 cents on the dollar (or so I was told by a dealer). So, many dealers kept the parts on hand, and kept selling them at retail.

I've bought out several dealers in NY and Canada. Sometimes you can make a heck of a deal, sometimes the guy wants $500.00 for some 100 and JDX series stuff that isn't worth half that. I've taken in some very nice finds at dealers too, like hard to find body parts and such, along with the typical junk like Salsbury clutch parts.

As far as I've been told, P/U and Dennis Kirk are separate companys, but I can't confirm or deny that either. Dennis Kirk is retail only, while P/U is wholesale only.

Have fun guys, and happy hunting,

Joe:

I heard essentially the same story from my JD dealer(s) in this area at the time. They were not happy. Both felt Deere had left them high and dry. Reportedly, Deere had told their dealers to push sled sales, sell them at cost if necessary, and make their money on parts & service. There was very good money in service part sales. After the Polaris buyout Deere dealers were then to purhase parts from Polaris and my dealer said they cost him significantly more, and extremely slow delivery, especially slow since he had not taken on the Polaris line. He was uncertain if they would ever come to him on a timely bases. Both area dealers were reluctant to order parts for me due to the anticipated long delivery time. They did not want to be a part of that situation. There was apparently some additonal layer of bureaucracy (or maybe Polaris revenge?) for a Deere dealer to go through to order parts from Polairs if he had not taken on Polaris sleds, as Polaris had hoped the majority of Deere dealers would. My dealer told me to "sell my Deeres as soon as possible before the situation became common knowlege, and to buy any brand except Polaris". Needless to say his JD sled parts/Polaris experience was somewhat less than satisfactory. Sold my 80 Liquifires and been with Arctic Cat ever since, which has been an excellent change of brand. Some things work out for the best.

I heard the same story from image, but buy back price was down to 10cents on a dollar. If I could afford a bear cat there'd be no question what I'd trail ride on but for now, I'll keep my deere running as best I can and tow the kids around the neighbors 40.

I asked Bob the first time I went there and if memory serves me he said he got most of it from dealers.
