Interchange for 293.5 motor

Post by Miller Motorsports »

I have a 79 Citation 300 that runs but has weak spark on the right lung. I was told by the girl at Total Recreation the local ski doo / yamaha scap yard that there is a swap I can do to get it to run on a cdi box from a newer sled. I am told that the points are behind the flywheel and I am there fore uneasy about the whole process of removing the flywheel. Does anyone know how tough this really is to clean and check the points? Does the Flywheel have to come off? I have checked the coils and wiring in the black box under the carb it looks good and the connections are clean. I have the same resistance off the two coils so they are okay it think. Anyone know?

There are three nuts around the starter drive hub that have to be removed. They take an 11mm socket (weird).

With the hub removed you have a access window in the flysweel that allows you to clean and adjust the points.

---------------

If you need to remove the flywheel than a large socket is required to take off the nut on the flywheel. And a puller is required to break it loose.

I did what you said and the flippin thing stopped making any spark period. I am lost does that mean the condensor is fried? I opened it the first time and moved it apart 18 thousandths. Subsequently I got no spark at all what so ever. I cleaned the points and that area with brake cleaner aerosol. I took everything back apart and moved the points back to where they seemed to be when I started and got some spark back but it isn't a bright full spark. I am about to take this motor out and swap it for the 377 safari motor I have here. I am waiting on the parts for my spitfire and the sportfire was stolen I am watching all the guys around here snowmobiling and suffering withdrawl symptoms... LOL Jm

You should file the points some. Brake cleaner will remove the grease and dirt but do nothing for pitting and corrosion. To clean use compressed air or electric contact cleaner.

I have weak spark on the right lung and average spark on the left. I will start but won't stay running ... I have no experience with the points thing just theory for its operation. Ether runs it best so I assume it burns easier. Carbs clean fuel pump works plugs are new wires are good ohms resistance says the coils are okay... Has to be points right?

Starting fluid also works to clean dirt or oil from points & drys clean, not so sure brake cleaner wouldn't leave some sort of film on them??

Keep in mind that when you adjust the points you are changing the timing, but that would have nothing to do with weak spark.. when adjusting points you have to turn the motor over to adjust each contact at each time the cam opens them..
Also it's best to file the points at the closed position so you have Max spring tension on them while filing..
