'79 Cat El Tigre problems

Post by speedy295 »

Well no I'm not trying to piss people off. I know exactly **** about about most deeres.

What I do know is my cat. And I already know about all the suggestions that have been made. I was hoping to find somone that had the exact problem I had. Noone has seemed to solve it, in the five cases I have found. I suspect that I need to order a brand new oem stator and cdi. I am not going to spend $1000 on a $400 sled. I have given up on the cdi system.

I'm not really reengineering anything. I'm taking a points plate that fits and bolting it up. Then I'm going to machine the flywheel to have a points cam on it. I wasn't asking questions about this. I'm just stating what I'm doing. I asked for help with my problem, noone could help. I appriciate the suggestions, but they have been tried.

Speedy, are you sure you want to convert to points? I have read about many people converting from points to CDI but never from CDI to points. This summer I finally converted my 69 Camaro from points to a non points (HEI) disributor. Duane

what happens when you unplug the wiring from the engine? It should still run this way and it eliminates all possibilty of bad switches/ wiring. If it is the cdi box then you should be able to get another one aftermarket alot cheaper then at cat. Also I think the pulse coil could be had the same way.
Dont give up on the cdi as it is far better than points any way you slice it.
Suzuki elctronics are generally a good set up with the exception of the charging systems on there gs series motorcycles.

Nothing changes when you unplug the chassis harness.

It has a new exciter/pulser coil. After I installed the new exciter coil, the timing was waaaay off when it was wired according to the original coils. However this conflicted with the fsm. When I wired it accoroding to the fsm, it ran perfectly for 10 minuets, then lost spark. I replaced the cdi box with a differen't one ( from a pantera 5000) it had spark but the timing was waay off because it was from a different set up. So I give up on the cdi.

I am switching to points becuase, its soo much simpler. When it don't have spark its one of 3 things points, exciter coil or ignition coil. Ya I may have to service the points, as of right now my 295/s has points and it don't complain, so I think I'll be ok.

Try using a CDI box from the same motor. The 5000 Pantera uses a different CDI box. Timing is different due to the LC vs FA motors.

Cat built a ton of 6000 Tiggers. You should be able to find good working used parts cheap.

I ditto EVERYONE else on not converting it points, its a step backwards.

It's not soo much that they have differen't timing, but that they have a completely different cdi setup. The 500 f/a tigger use the same cdi as the 440l/c.

I guess everyone is mis reading my post. If I get another CDI there is a huge chance that its just gonna burn up in about 10 min of running. There are vast discrepancies in the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL. Truthfully I dpn't want to ditch the cdi, but short of buy brand new oem parts, I think I don't have any other options.

You can all sleep soundly at night now...I broke down and built a new cdi for the sled.

The original problem was the stator I am 99% sure. The cdi box was my fault

I'll still argue no. They require more maintanince than a solidstate ignition, but when they are broken, points are no doubt easier to fix. With old snomobiles that don't get rode to much, I'd rather have a little maintaince, over hunder of dollars in parts that might not fix it.
