All 8,900 DMC cars were built over a 9 month period ending in Oct. 1980, as 81 Model year cars. There were no "82" or "83" DeLorean's built, only a batch of "left overs" being sold by John Z's brother Chuck after the factory liquidation. When new, they had a $25,000 sticker price.
Only the very outer (non structural) skin was stainless. The underbody conecting the "X" frame to the rest of the car was a huge plasic molded piece from front to rear, top to bottom. There were 3 iterations of the hood, in part due to the difficulty in stamping stainless w/o cracking it. The early interiors were black leather, but the later and more desirable ones were gray. Parts of the rear and front facias were made from a new plastic process called "RIMM" for reaction injection molding. The composit company under the corp. umbrella of John Z. was one of the few to make out of the backrupt company and thrive.
There was a 5 speed Renauld tranny available, or a 3 speed auto. Manuals were more desirable as they got the most out of the little 2.8 liter 140~ish hp PRV V-6 with Both K-jetronic fuel injection.
Some of the most desirable DMC's have the Legend Industries twin turbo kit installed. It was to be a factory option for 82, but John went broke and the factory in Ireland was closed by the British Gov't.
Surprisingly parts available is still reasonable good as there is a warehouse full of this stuff in the mid-west. They even talked about building a few 'continuation' cars. The motor was shared to the French Peujoit (SP!?), Renauld and Volvo, and Renauld proved the transmission that was shared with the Alpine.
14" front tires were spec'd by Lotus to offset the rear mounted motor as 15" were back there, all originally Goodyear NCT's.
Check Evil-bay and Hemmings motor news, but the prices range wildly from 10 to 15K for a good running example and from 5K to 7,500 for fixer uppers.
I hope this helps,

Thanks Joe that 5k sounds in my ball park, I've been watching this car for over 10 years, LOL & the best part is I've never even seen it yet, I guess I should go look at it this summer.. anybody know if they had known elect. problems or is it just this one, I think it's in the charging system as I think he says it keeps eating up alt.'s

Well I'll never be able afford a 427 Yenko Camero or 427 Biscayne or Hemi Challenger or Dart, ( If I didn't know now what I didn't know then ) so I have to settle for something cheap & yet cool?? LOL

They had LUCAS (Loose Unsoldered Connections And Shorts) electrical systems of England, and a too small of an alternator. The electrical engineer on the job underestimated the electrical load of the car, especially with the AC on.
With a 2.8L V-6 making 140 hp, acceleration was not stunning.
I think 5K sounds reasonable too.
Todd, I belive it was British Rover that bout the old aluminum V-8 from GM, and used derviation of that motor for decades.
Good Luck,

Hey, Kenny...sounds like you found an interseting car there and at a good price. If you buy it, be real careful when hitting 88 mph as you might find yourself going back to 1984 or so....but if you do, try and get to Horicon and see if you can get the bean counters at John Deere to keep making sleds. There is a pretty strong Delorean owners club that could likely provide you with tons of useful info to get the car into good condition. Man, those gull wing doors make for lots and lots of questions and be prepared to give rides to complete strangers, especially kids. I have a Bricklin (which seems to be commonly mistaken for a Delorean) and everytime I have it out, it tends to generate a fair bit of interest.
What year SV-1 do you have? If I remember correctly Malcome made them with Ford 351's at first and then Mopar 360's. I think they were built for about 3 years from 74-76 or so? I actually have an original Bricklin brochure somewhere here, and a small Delorean one too.
And I thought I liked obscure cars, LOL! Never saw a Turbo T/A or V-6 Buick I didn't like!
