I have an oppurtunity to pick up 2 running trailfires for $600, is there anything that I need to look for mechanically?? They need some cosmetic work, ie paint is flaking, windshield.

Hurry over there with some cash. Really, they look pretty solid for the price in my opinon. Aside from chassis bearings, crank seals and carb/fuel system rebuilds all vintage sleds need, the only real point of concern on a Trailfire is the track. However, those sleds look to be 340's, are they are pretty gentle on that cleated unit.
If any cleats are broken or missing, replace them promptly and those tracks last a long time. You can also replace them with 80-84 Liquifire tracks and drive axles if one fails.

Heres a few pics of my 82lx the hood was alot worse than yours. I used spray can dull aluminum paint then clear coated it. It is a pretty close match to the tprs.
