340S Engine Removal

Post by WinnipegStPaul9 »

When I dissassembled my 340S, I discovered that the engine plate was hard to get to without removing the track and exhaust pipe. This was "fixed" on the Cyclone and LF models for 1976 with an engine plate change. I knew that we had done something to make engine removal easier on our race sled so I went back to my pictures and sure enough I found and subsequently remembered that we had cut a "trap door" in the bottom of the engine compartment so as to make the four engine bolts easier to access. While my current 340S has four 1 1/4" holes for access, it doesn't look to me like they'll line up so I did not cut the matching holes in the belly pan. For me, it's too late to cut and install a trap door but some of you might like to see how we did it so here's a picture. It was hinged at the front in the event it came open and I think we used Zeus (spelling) fasteners to keep it closed. DA

Don, I'm not up on how the motor bolts in there & my one chassis I have here is buried but can't the bolts have a strap welded between them to keep them from turning & keep them in place??

DA,

I thought that when the aluminum pan kits were installed that part of the installation was to drill 4 holes in alignment with the four holes in the bottom of the main frame were the engine mounts.

My pan doesn't have the access holes.

I have the eng out to replace the crank seals, so I will send pics of what we did 30+ years ago. Next time you have the track out weld the two bolts to a plate and pop rivet it to the inside of tunnel. Front two are welded to a plate also. Very easy and Fast to remove eng and you don't loose your alignment.
also a pic of reinforced eng plate. Enjoy ED
