295/S & 340/S pistons
A few of the 340/S guys already know this, BUT for the rest of you out there, if anyone else is in negotiations with a piston Mfg. at this time on Re-manufacturing 295/S & 340/S Pistons, Please let me know ASAP.. Next week I will be getting Blue Prints drawn up
( thanks to all who responded ) & will be taking the prints to Vietnam with me when I go Feb 16th. While there I plan on trying to find a piston MFG. that might give us a quote on a smaller Quantity & still be reasonably priced?? I will try to get the 340/S Pistons done the same as NOS so they can accept the OEM Piston Rings as there seems to be approximately 125+ NOS/OEM rings out there and available.. If this fails in VN, then we can check with Wiseco or a other Mfg. if we can come up with anyone else??.
Also could I get an Idea of how many would be interested in 295/S or 340/S pistons?? And who would be willing to PREPAY for them..
REMEMBER the Dator REPOPED Pistons?? same as those, Don't get hung out without any in a couple of years...
IF you have a 295/S or 340/S, Think at some point you wish or might have, or just want some trading material for in the future, IT MIGHT be a good idea to purchase some?? as there probably is going to be ONE order & ONE order only, so don't miss out as some did on the Dator Pistons. When There Gone They WILL be GONE.. As we probably won't be able to order a couple at a time...
I have got NO IDEA on a price of these ea.. Keep in mind that all shipments from VN go through US Customs in Long Beach Ca. & go through a broker there & then have to be shipped from there to here... Kind of a double shipping charge.. I have connections to get them shipped out of VN to LB & A broker in LB to get them shipped here..
The price on the Dator Wiseco Pistons I believe were $100.00 - $125.00 ea. on the Pre-order & then I think around $150.00 ea after that.. THINK that's HIGH? As far as I know there isn't any left & Price a New Piston for a NEW sled...
I'm hoping we can be in around the $60.00 to $80.00 ea. range BUT that is only wish'n & Hope'n ???
Thanks
Kenny

Kenny, at 60-80 each I'd be in for 295 pistons. Are you thinking of getting oversize ones done? I'm sure there are a few tore up cylinders out there.

Kenny~
My company is direct with Wiseco Pistons, (right here in the USA) as we build automotive racing engines here for a number of Corvette applications using custom slugs all the time. If you need something produced, I can probably get it done for you effeciently, as I know a couple of guys I deal with in engineering over there.
Feel free to email me if you'd like some help, we'll exchange phone numbers and I'll see what I can do for you folks.

Kenny~
I just got off the phone w/ Wiseco and they are eager to assist us in whatever we need to produce these vintage pistons for you. The minimum's are low to support a production run of any given part number (under 25) and the more that are purchased, the lesser the cost per unit they are.
FYI~ For those of you guys' on the fence regarding purchasing a set of these vintage, high quality, reproduced pistons from a leading 2-stroke piston manufacturer, **NOW** is the time to decide for certain to make the commitment; as the cost will be lower than you think, you'll eventually need them anyway and it's likely these will not be reproduced again...
Oh....just in case anyone asks~ I'm not making a dime on any of this, as I'm just offering our services, my time and business contacts to help you fellow JD sled rider guys' out where I can. Anything more I can do to help, let me know. =-)
Perhaps Kenny can co-ordinate the FAQ in this thread and logistics regarding this venture and I'll do the rest? Maybe a "sticky" thread to keep everyone "in the know"? Just a thought...
Also Kenny, I sent you a lengthy email full of details, so give me a shout back when you get a chance.

Guy's keep in mind exactly what PJ is saying here, The more we order the more reasonable the price will become to a point..pj sportfire wrote: The minimum's are low to support a production run of any given part number (under 25) and the more that are purchased, the lesser the cost per unit they are.

Lets face it, once these are gone JUST like the NOS ones they will be gone, I or anyone else shouldn't be expected to be a Whse for these pistons. ( Now unless someone wants to step forward & foot the bill for these & handle the orders & shipping I'll gladly turn this over to anyone??) for whoever needs them 2 + years from now.. I am also not making any money for this either & don't want to/or can't front this cost other than what I order for myself.. Of course there will be shipping & Ins. costs that will be accrued getting the orders shipped to the individuals who order them..
ALL orders will need to be PREPAID.. Once we give PJ the go ahead on orders..
My suggestion was Std & .020 over on both the 295/S & 340/S
After looking at the responses so far to orders I'm slightly surprised at the low enthusiasm & orders?? I might suggest that a minimal order of 4 pistons be appropriate, Being if you plan on riding these sleds, at some point you might need them or can use them as trading material for other needed parts, look at it this way they will never loose there value if stored properly & once all Pistons are sold the value can only go up..
Sorry if this seems candid to some of you, but it's being realistic..
Kenny

Being as I've been talking about this for most of the past year, I am in for at least 2 std sets, maybe a couple of the oversize too.
We need a ballpark $$ figure.

Once I get the sample pistons to PJ & he gets them to Wiseco then we should have an Idea on price.. Until then we need to get the word out, so if any of you know someone with a 295/S or 340/S that isn't on the board everyday please let them know whats in the works..
Once we have a price I plan on posting on the Vintage Sleds & NH boards, & then will start taking Pre-Paid orders..

Hey Kenny and Pj,
I too missed out on this thread til now. I'm in for one set of the 295/s and one set of the 340/s std pistons (4 pistons). Are the .020 for each sled being made??
Thanks,
Craig
Maybe a dumb question here but with Wiseco, don't they have there own ring design? If so, do we need spare sets of rings for these too for down the road?

We are discussing Std & .020 over as the 2 sizes for each engine that will be available.
What I have proposed to PJ is that for the 340/S anyway, that we try to use the same Wiseco rings that were used for the Wiseco Dator Pistons/rings, unless there is something that is readily available from Wiseco that is better than those rings were..

I'm in for a pair for my new 295s. I know for a fact that the more we can purchase at one time the cheaper it gets. I, in the past, was checking into this for myself & fellow Bolens Diablo collectors.
Keep us all posted & Thanks for the help

Hi guys.
Like Kenny said, once we get all of our ducks in a row regarding the details of what you guys want to see in these pistons, proposed design spec data, piston samples, ring pack samples, piston pin samples, drawings, size desires or design durability data/modifications of what you guys know works - doesn't work or anything else you guys' feel is important that you can provide will expedite the process along much more effiecently to keep costs in check and get us the right parts produced the first time out. Plus, they believe that they can knock out these pistons rather quickly to get them to their respective customers, just in case they want to go riding with their machines yet this Winter Season.
I think Kenny and his co-harts have some NOS samples Wiseco can use to develop from, which will speed things up a ton. Plus, Kenny has a zillion part numbers and other useful info that will help the Wiseco guys immensely also. He's really the hub of this project in putting all of this together I think- good guy he is.
I'll send the whole "care package" lot of info and sample parts we've gathered to Wiseco all at once to let them do thier thing. Then, they will call me back to discuss costs, etc. I think I can say this with confidence though- just from talking with our rep there, I think these piston kits will come in **WELL BELOW** $100 if that gives some of you an idea... That's excellent pricing for such a short run! I'll post the finals numbers up here first though before the production run is started, just to make sure everyone is on board. In other words, Wiseco, nor myself will do anything w/out you guy's approval first.
Cheers!
