got the 75'JD to run (a little at least)

Alright so I unfroze the pistons yesterday with a bunch of kroil and took off the pull starter(wouldnt retract) and fixed that. Today I checked compression (around 130 on both sides, I dont know if you want to call this a wet or dry test being there was some kroil in there but kroils pretty thin and really wouldnt seal rings well I think). Put new spark plugs in and pulled cord and it looked like a lightning storm

:) So I rigged up the gas lines (is just one the gas and one the overflow?) into a milk jug. I opened the choke(have to do this by hand there isnt even a choke to pull out on the dash anymor) and sprayed a tiny bit of ether in and pulled and takeoff

:D I had it running for about 5-10 minutes with the choke a quarter of the way open and it filled my barn with smoke...a lot of smoke...I expected this burning out the old gas and kroil and **** but when I went to shut the choke it died out. I couldnt keep it running without the choke at least a quarter open and when I tried to give it gas it just bogged out.

:( So I came inside and printed up the carb tune up page I found on a web site and turned my low screw out 1 turn from seated and the high screw 3/4 out from seated. With the throttle screw I turned it all the way in and then out 2 turns. At this time I also hooked up a clear gas line into the carb instead of the black one I was using. I tried to start it again and it wouldnt pull the gas without a little bit of help from me getting it to the carb with some ether wich I kept the engine running with until I got some gas to carb but it wasnt a steady stream. probally because the engine wasnt running good? But anyways after doing this It barely runs at all it might run for a few seconds and just die out even with the carb open, half open, etc. I seemed better at the start. I changed plugs and that didnt help. Now I can just barely keep it running with the help of some ether and also the overflow (Im assuming the other port at bottom of carb is overflow) was leaking a steady stream of gas for a while and then blowing out a little here and there. But like I said now I have the damn thing barely running at all and dont know what to do...Is there some general rule of thumb as to where the carb should be set to get your tuning started? Am I not getting enough gas? I dont know why it ran for so long with the choke open at first, and like I said when I tried to close the choke it would bog out. Pretty much the same thing If I tried to give it gas I was even turning the throttle screw in and out trying to get it to rev high so I could turn the choke off but really no luck...Now I dont know what to do, Im a rookie.....sorry for long post...thanks....Jake

The carb no doubt needs some attention. ( Yes, one line is supply, the other a return ) Disassembly and cleaning, and while you are at it a full kit. The rubber diaphrams are no doubt deteriorated.
It really depends on what you intend to do with the sled, how much time and effort you want to put into it.

A really good job would require a complete tear down and inspection. Seal replacement
would be recomended at the least. The jugs could be lightly honed to clean up the rust, and the pistons polished up a bit. If you wanted it right, the crank could be completely rebuilt..but, you get the drift.

It s easy to get into one of those: " in for a penny, in for a pound kind of deals"
You gotta decide where you want to go with this. You have established that it is functional, how far do you want to go from here.

Like Brian said your gonna need a carb rebuild in short. Like I tried to say in my last post about the rusty cylinders check your compresion again to be safe make sure you didnt stick the rings. Just tore down a motor tonight that wasnt even stuck or seized when I started running last weekend. It started with 120lbs plus of compresion after about 10 minutes run time it wouldnt even restart compresion had dropped to 60lbs after ripping it down tonight sure enough 3 outa 4 rings were stuck fully compressed.

It isnt really worth pulling the carb apart to clean it at this point just go for the complete rebuild kit not just the diaphram kit and do it and get it over with.

Nice to hear you made some progress though 1 thing you did I dont recomend was the either thing. Its ok to use to fire up a sled that runs but repeatidly starting a sled thats not getting mixed fuel and keeping it running with either is a no-no. Im not gonna list everything possible but it can ruin almost everypart of the motor from piston to crankseals.

Get yourself an old windex bottle or similar and put mixed gas in it and use that. Another great thing to use is an old bottle from contact lense solution with the squirty top. Works nice to get gas in plug holes also and the smaller bottles can even be cared in the storage compartment for cold starts. These are also awesome for priming the mikunis on the fire sleds.
