atv with sled engine
Just wondering what you guys think about putting a 79 spitfire engine in a polaris four wheeler?Do you think it will over heat? Most of my riding is in open fields but occasionaly I do some slower bush riding but I rarley ever ever play in the mud(I dont like to get dirty or subject my machine to too much mud as it gets in every place you can imagine and and some places you cant).
I think this engine is very much like the early seventies street bike engines so I dont think I will have too much trouble.
What do ya think?
Thanks
Dan

Unless you are using it below freezing it will not work well.
Also consider the lack of HP with the little 340.

Through A Liquifire Motor in there. It has a radiator.

I would be jetting it correct for the warmer temps and the little 340 has more ponies then the 250 that came out of the atv.JDT wrote:Unless you are using it below freezing it will not work well.

What do you think of a ccw 440/4?they are considered a atv engine by the manufacturer.

Fan cooled sleds do not work good in hot temps. The fan pulling hot air across a hot engine wont do anything for it.

Huh?How does an open atv chassis alllow warm air to be blown across the engine?Oh I guess you mean warm outside temp.Mr. Deere wrote:Fan cooled sleds do not work good in hot temps. The fan pulling hot air across a hot engine wont do anything for it.
This ccw 440/4 was available in a six wheeler or an "argo" type chassis so I think it may be OK.I also have a ccw 340 twin(supposed to make 25hp which is still more than the stock engine) that was in a merc lightning that might be a viable engine.
What do you think?
Thanks

Ya Sorry I meant the Warm outside temp. The fan cooled sleds like to run hot in the 40 and 50 degree weather we have been having so we have not been doing any riding.

I HAD AN OLD THREE WHEELER CHOPPER MACHINE THAT HAD A 640 ROTAX MOTOR RIGHT OUT OF A SKI DOO SNOWMOBILE.. RAN IT FOR YEARS ALL SUMMER LONG AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM AND IT WAS A FAN COOLED MOTOR.. HAVE YOU GUYS EVER SEEN A TERRA JET.. THEY ARE A SUMMER MACHINE THAT CAME WITH KOHLER FAN SNOWMOBILE ENGINES, MY BUDDIE HAS ONE... TERRA-JET.COM .. I WOULD GO FOR IT AND HAVE FUN. HERES A PICTURE OF THE TERRA JET CORVETTE WITH THE FACTORY KOHLER. THIS ONE IS A 1972 AND I SEEN THE NEW ONES COME WITH 4 CYCLE ENGINES..

Wow,if a hot running rotax will do it(they like to over heat in the winter) than anything will.

I TALKED WITH THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE TRIKE THREE WHEELER I HAD, AND HE SAID IT CAME ORIGINAL WITH A CCW ENGINE 440 OR 400.. FACTORY PRODUCED ATV WITH A SNOWMOBILE ENGINE... I SEE YOUR GOING TO TUNE IT FOR THE WARMER WEATHER.. MAKE SURE THE PLUGS ARE NOT WHITE OR LEEN LOOKING WHICH I AM SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO TUNE. THE SPITTFIRE MUST OF HAD THE FREE-AIR, YOU MIGHT HAVE TO STOP AND LET IT COOL DOWN HERE AND THERE.. I THINK A DIRTY CARB OR LACK OF FUEL WOULD CAUSE MORE DAMAGE THAN WARM WEATHER FROM MY EXPERIENCES. PLEASE UPDATE WHEN YOU GET IT IN THERE, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE IT IN ACTION..

It wont be for a little while but I will get back to you on how it works. No video as I only have no speed dial up.
I think I will go for the ccw 340 as the ccw 440 has a bigger fan tower for the external mounted fan and I think it will be too tight to fit.
Thanks

With proper jetting, I see no reason why you couldn't use any sled engine in an ATV, be it fan, F/A, or L/C. That being said, it would be no small feat to stuff a snowmobile mill into an ATV if you expect it to run well and expect good reliability. Space considerations are going to be a factor. If you want electric start, you'll need an engine with the starter mounted on the flywheel side instead of a clutch type ring gear because you'll need to use an ATV clutch that has the cooling fins mounted to the backside where a ring gear would often be found on an E/S sled clutch. There's always way more to these projects than first meets the eye. Then after you get about 80 hours or so into the job, you'll feel like you are so committed to it that you have to finish what you started no matter what.....even though by that time, you are beginning to realize that you shouldn't have started in the first place because it's just way more involved than you first thought it would be. But, there's no turning back now.....what's a couple hundred more hours and another $800.00 in parts anyways? No big deal!
Honestly, I'm not trying to discourage you at all. It's just that I've attempted lots of weird projects myself and generally this is what happens when I try to build a better mousetrap. But heck, the real fun is in the build....so I say, go for it and show us what you come up with.
