I don't know about the 72's but an 80 jag key will work in the 74 and 75 300 and 400's. I think that all the keys in the early Deere's will interchange along with some cat key's. There are alot of keys that swap between the relic sleds.

As far as I know, the earlier JD sleds (the ones that did not use the universal Indak ignition key) had only 5 different possible keys (A,B,C,D, or E). Do you remember if there was a letter stamped into your key? If so, then just find another key with the same letter. If you look at Cat or Polaris keys, the letter designation is identified by dots in the black rubber on the key. One dot=A, 2 dots=B, and so forth. My old 76 JD 400 had a B key which would interchange with my buddies 77 Jag. Just keep trying keys and you will likely soon find one that will work.

Unplug the wires off the switch. Should start right up.

I have a scorpion key in my 73 400. The key from my brothers 73 panther works as well. The newer deeres use dthe indak style key like most low budget lawnmowers do. I have a toro key in my trailfire right now.
