Spitfire Iginiton timing

My son and I tore a Koheler engine apart out of 78 Spitfire. I forgot to stamp the stator plate for the timing mark. Does anybody know where I can roughly set it? I got it back together but I can't get even pop. Got great compresion. When I took it apart, it didn't want to pick up very fast from a idle, gas would just flow thru the engine. So I tore it down and put new rings and seals in it, then I went and did this. Live and learn. Thanks.

hmmm.... this may not be all that helpful. I have forgotten to do the same (i.e., mark it). Usually you can tell (by close, real close) examination where the plate was centered previously (compression mark or lack of dirt/grease ona portion of the stator, etc.

Have you rulled out everything else (wiring, etc??)

I have the manual for the 78 Spitfire, and it has the timing proceedure in it. I will either post a summary of it here, or send it to your home e-mail. You can also buy the Spitfire manual that covers all 78-82 Kohler and Kawi Spit's at any JD Dealer.

Good luck with your sled,

Did check out the marks on the stator plate but there really wasn't anything to go by. Found a couple of little marks, got it close but not right. Got it to run but would like to be able to check the timing to make certain that its right. Still loads up after starting it and coming off of idle. Don't know what to think of that.

Joe, do you think you could post or send me that timing info for this sled? Also, realized I need a new intake manifolf for this sled, do you or anybody else have one?

Thanks for the help.
