Spitfire track conversion

Post by Jingles »

Recently bought a couple Spits while looking for a replacement track for one I allready
had. The 80 has had a track conversion to a yamaha track. The suspension travel
seams to be siezed, and I will be removing the track soon to see what the problem is, and will have a good look at the conversion. I know it works, as I was grass dragging
one of the other Spits with this machine on the weekend. Here's the info I got.
track - camoplast # 8G04-785G
drive sprockets 8G04-108-20
align sprockets with track, and drill new holes thru sprocket hubs, and drive axle
suspension mount holes in tunnel are moved 1 inch forward
the idler top mount must also be moved back 13 3/4 inches, 3 1/4 inches down from
top of tunnel.
The last part I don,t really under stand. Will need to have a closer look. Not all 3
machines have 3 bolts going into the side of the tunnel.
Obviously the pitch is different from the original track, and a note I have, says that the
gearing is increased to aprox. 60mph. When I learn more, will report. Jingles.

I have stripped apart this machine and this is what I found.
-ther was no rear suspension travel because the susp. was assembled wrong
-there were wear marks from the track on the top of the tunnel
-the track drive gears are supposed to fit a hexagonal drive shaft
-the drive gears are a much larger diameter than the originals
-the drveshaft bearings have been assembled incorrectly to the tunnel
-the front mount shaft for the suspension is tottaly siezed in the susp.
-the lower pivot shaft for the rear susp. siscor arm extremely worn
-the drive gears are mounted off to on side so that the track is not centered
-ther is no, nor ever was idler gears for the track, there must be 2 diff. versions
-I'm really glad I found this board for help.
-HELP!!! Ron.
