CDI interchange

Post by cyclestud »

I have been looking for a CDI for my '76 liquifire 440. I had a local shop order one for me for $70 but after it came in I found out it had the type A connector and I need the type B. Is there any difference between the two CDI units other than the plugs? I believe hewtech sells an adapter for it I just want to make sure that the actual CDI units are the same. If anyone could tell me, or give me info on how to make the interchange plugs myself that would be great too. Also, on the hewtech website ( www.CDIbox.com ) they sell a fireplug CDI for $145. Has anyone used one of these or have any info on if they are better than the original CDI design? Thanks for the help,
Eric

I have been using Hewtech's cdi box in both my 76 cyclone and 76 liquifire. I have had them for a few years now with no problems. Before I bought them I spoke with him on the phone, he was very helpful guiding me to diagnose the problem. I feel confident with his product and his cdi box is the only one on the market that offers a warranty/return policy. Since I have installed the Hewtec cdi box, I have created a diagnostic post including the ohm readings chart provided by Hewtec, in the FAQ section for everyone to use.
I had asked Scott (Hewtec) about adapting a round plug to a square plug . Following the wiring diagram, simply cut off the round plug and splice on the square plug, matching the wire correctly.

Thanks for the info guys. The only problem with cutting the wires on the A style one that was ordered for me is that the plugs come directly off the box, there is no wiring to the plugs. Do you know if there is any wiring diagrams showing the plugs for the A style. Something like the B style showing in the FAQ section would be great.

I would see if you could return the cdi for the correct one since you never used it. In the chart provided..
http://www.hewtechelectronics.com/images/F...UG%20WIRING.pdf
The color code of wires for the A style is crossed over to the B style.
There will be 5 wires coming out of the engine block in 2 groups.
Group 1 will be the white and black from the stator
Group 2 will be the black, red, white from the timing ring
To identiify the wires , remove the flywheel and you will see where the wires come from. The outer coil is the stator and the inner coil is the timing ring
