lighting coil for 80 liquifire

Post by burt87 »

I'm putting my machine back together and noticed the lighting coil has a small gash in it. I can't tell if any of the wires are cut through completely. Can I run a bead of solder across the questionable wires, or should I find a new coil.

Thank's for any help.

The molten solder will melt the varnish on the adjacent wires and short the coil.
So the answer is no.

Did you test the coil with an ohm meter?

If it is open you can find a new one easily and not too expensive either.

Thank's JDT, I did not test it, I might as well just get a new one. Does anyone know somebody with a NOS one, I've used an after market one before and it was a hair larger(could not tell by looking at it) and it destroyed my flywheel. I'm trying to stay away from evilbay.

An ohm meter will tell you if the coil has continuity.

Just because it has a nick does not mean that it is not serviceable.

I'll give the ohm meter a try. I'de rather not spend the money on a new one if I don't absolutly have too.

i had the same problem from an ebay engine the ohms were good and when added an electric start motor i could check it for ac volts on the bench you can check it with the pull rope if it ohms out good. you will see voltage as you pull. also i touched up the coil enamel with engine paint it still works i also had to solder one and insulated that one with engine paint too. jim
