295/S Newbie

Post by monte44 »

I just recently purchased two 295/S locally (one real high production number and one real low). The engine on the one has been rebuilt and ready to go in but I have decided to give it a full blown resto first. I have a few questions on these machines. First are the 295 engines normally easy starting engines that you can ride off and on or are they so race minded that you don't wanna ride em that much?? also I have a very rusty/rusted on secondary clutch on the one, what is the best way for getting it off without damaging it? and am I just better off switching to the newer style cdi box you guys have talked about or just go with the old box(don't even know if the old one works). I also need some parts of course!! The other one will be for sale(complete except for the air box). Any help would be great!!

Thank You,
Aaron

Welcome to the 295/s club. First off 295/s are normally pretty easy starters and actually fairly trail friendly depending on how the clutches are setup. other than liking lots of rpm they run much like the other deeres. Are these from New Ulm? :beers;

If it still has the original grass drag inspired clutching, you may find it too hot for close quarters trail riding. So you may have to do a little tuning there.

Dennis Kirk has them in their catalog. You'll have to drill two holes in each.

OK thank You. Is anyone repoping the vin decal on the tunnel for the 295? Mine is very wore away but I can clearly see the stamped numbers/letters yet.

I have more 295/S questions that I am hoping someone can help me with. First off what is the hi/low compression range for the 295 engine. One other thing I have noticed is that one 295 I have has a 27 degree secondary helix and the other has a 34 degree which one is correct for the sled? Roughly when was the 295 body stripe changed from yellow/black to just yellow or vise versa. Is the solid yellow stripe an early or late model production? As I am getting closer to completion I am coming up with more and more questions sorry about that. Oh yeah one more question (for now at least) where have you guys been getting the foil covered foam for the heat shield between the small fuel tank and the engine?

Thank you

the black yellow stripe, was early production to about 550. Then the the yellow only was after that. I believe the 27 degree was for 295/s. The foil I have never seen actually on the sled yet. On mine it has been removed. Compression at least 90 PSI, cyls should be within 10%

It would be the same tank as all the other 00/JDX, which are silver.
