Don`t Have Consistent Spark

Post by markmac »

Just got a jdx4 and have begun to do the stuff you have to do when you get a sled that has not run for years. Cleaned tank and carb, new fuel lines ; now trying to start it and it will fire first pull and then seems to be fireing haphazzerdly{ i think thats a word}.
It seemed to have good spark, but when i hooked a battery up to it and then watched the spark it is strong briefly and then becomes closer to being yellow. I am thinkig new coils but just wanted the input of you guys.
It is a 73 jdx4 so it has the kohler in it. Cleaned ground wire connections so that is not the trouble.
Give me input before i go get coil from Knoblauch.

Please read the trouble shooting FAQ.
I would clean / adjust, or replace the points before you go too far.
Plug wires and caps could be an issue as well.

I'm not sure what you were hooking the battery to, this is a magneto system, if you have electric start, thats about all the battery does.

I just ment that with battery hooked up and cranking away, i could get a better look at the spark colour and consistence. Anyway put new coils on and have since had it running.

Id still bet it was a ground issue you solved by changing the coils. But glad you got it.
