295/s sled set up

Post by I500 »

When setting up for a drag raceing sled you need to set yourself up with a personal bench-mark and improve upon this idea. Lots of guys have ben posting questions about clutch, carb settings etc .
I am by no means any kind of an expert but i will post my findings and hope others can improve on these and also point out these weaknesses. < there are plenty here but this might be a good start >

I think a problem with doing something like this is that to many people will be inclined to post items from a book . Throw the book away as we are not going trail rideing here and these can only be achieved with past experiances and lots of testing ,testing and then test some more to find out what works for you .

The 295/s sled that i will be describing here has an extremely bad hole -shot <bog> but after that split second relapse she raises up the ski,s and rips threw the early stages great threw the mid range ,does good at full throttle and then starts to fall flat.

This is my personal bench mark and it can only get better from here . Hope you guys can help me out here and give yourselves a reason to come out and play. Kinda sucks being the only Deere guy at the races.

Steel ski,s with 6" carbides
3" ski spreaders
60 3/4" ice picks

100c primery clutch
blue spring
E weights

Secondary <stock>
red spring
1 hole

PTO Carb ----carbs stamped JD 295
air screw = 1 turn out
140 main
40 pilot
needle,jet 3rd notch
throttle valve 2.5

IGN Carb
same as above

Any ideas? What would you guys and gals do differently? REMEMBER : Not really interested in what your book says as we are not pulling a fish house with this sled.

THANK YOU

Rich, Wouldn't going to a 50 pilot be a cheaper route than to go & buy a 2.0 slide??
& wouldn't you be doing the same thing?? Richening the low end & through some of the midrange by going to a 50 pilot?? I can see where going to a 2.0 would richen the low end but going to the 30 pilot would lean the low endso wouldn't you be just where you started?? & where as going to the 30 pilot you would be leaning out the midrange also because the cutaway would not be in effect once the throttle valve is pick up off the bottom of the carb body? I'm just asking questions here as I never played with changing the throttle valves.

What I found is that the secondary spring is weak. Hence when the clutch primary engages is sucks the belt too far down in the secondary hence making it up shift too fast. I drilled new holes for my secondary for the spring. Mine runs great and holds the skis' up all the way down the track.

all i did was change my primary to 102c with black spring and raised the needle jets. it worked great but then again all sleds are different. i run the boogie slide and run racing fuel. keep trying you will get it sooner or later.

Chuck,
First you need to stay away from Donut Hut, this will get the power to wieght ratio down. Next, you being alittle older and your sight not being what it used to be. You should install a light sencer to pick up when the green light comes on and applies full throttle. Plus you should leave the walker in the pits, your never going to pick any chicks' up with that thing strapped to the back of the sled!!!!
ALL IN ALL good luck with the 295 thing I know you will have fun. We raced ours for many years and had a great time. Good to hear someone is waving the JD flag at these vintage events. Me I am still paying the clinic off for my surgery. Seems I can't quite get ahead yet. Just want to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I have a project just sitting here waiting for me to spend money on it!!

Ron,

You completely forgot about that big head creating to much aerodynamic drag.

:D Chuck, I suggest wind tunnel testing. It really helps those nascar boys!!

You sick Bas#!rd its good to hear from you. I see your sense of humor is still in need of improvements. Give me a call sometime and we,ll get together over some do-nutz and beer. That 340/s is nearing completion and looking good. I would like to talk to you about your 295/s. Dont be a stranger.

Ramon. You know i love you and still you treat me so badly.

Stymie.. I,m afraid i,m just having a hard time with this sled. You got very lucky and i fear that i will be spending lots of time testing ,tuneing and retesting this sled and still not getting it right.

Rich .. I,m still working on your suggestions but when i switched to the 30 pilot jets something got lost. Is it possible that i should of went to 50,s instead of the 30,s. I,m pretty determined on getting this right. Also i couldnt find the black spring and substatuted it with the purple. Any ideas?

I'm not trying to start **** BUT.
Well I hate to say this, But first I would fix the tach, 2nd I wouldn't worry about how hard the sled jerks when you ease into the throttle.
I'll be up the end of March Chuck

The 27 degree secondary cam has seemed to really reduce the slippage i was getting on the high end. I am also using the 2.0 throttle valve.

Rich... I am actually listening
