Sportfire/Trailfire oil pump line

OK, stupid question: The inlet on the oil pump on my Sportfire seems to be made for larger line then 1/4", but the tank outlet is 1/4". Is the line suppose to be larger after the oil filter?

Matt, the only stupid question, is the one that is not asked. Anyways, I can't answer your question based on any written knowledge only what I have seen. My 82 Sportfire is the same, 1/4" outlet at the tank, slightly larger inlet at the pump, but the line was all 1/4" from tank to inlet. Not sure if it was the original line or not. So I went ahead and replaced it with 1/4" line from tank to pump. It's a tight fit on the pump, but you should be able to get it on. Not sure if this helps a lot, but it's one point of data.

Matt,

1/4" all the way. I use the yellow Tygon line or yellow Oregon line. It will fit over the oil pump inlet.

It is a tight fit but will stretch over the inlet.

Matt, a little trick to make your sporty pump bleeding go faster is to bleed the pump using the bleed screw. Then remove the pump from the recoil. Chuck up the drive key in your favorite drill and spin the pump with the lever at wide open until you get oil coming out your lines. It's a lot better than running the sled and having to hold the pump open with a coat hanger while you make adjustments. The Sport/Trail is the only oil pump that I've seen that is driven the way it is.

When replacing fuel/oil lines I chew on the end for about 30 seconds this softens it up & also warms it up so it slides on easier.
better & safer than using a lighter on a fuel line to heat it up, :doh: :bonk:

After working on these since the 70's I found to fill the lines before you start is the best way. I do it with a bottle that has a squirt top as used in chem labs (water bottle). The top fits into the oil line you must only remove the other end untill it fills. It will not fill if attached. I use the squirt bottle for engine assemby and keep it filled with two stroke oil. Works great, simple and quick.

I too do what Jim does. I dribble and squirt oil all over as I put an engine back together.

Thanks for the tip Jim - I replaced all gas and oil lines on my sportfire Thurs night. Priming oil line took about a minute with the squirt bottle. I left a small air bubble in the line and took my first spin of the year. What a great feeling...got back in garage and confirmed the pump was pulling oil as bubble had moved toward pump end.

On another note check your fan when you pull it out of storage. Mice had infiltrated the fan and packed the engine shroud plum full of fibers. I pulled enough packing out to fill a gallon pail.

I opened the bleeder screw until the line filled, then closed it and used the drill trick to spin the pump, but I didn't get any oil moving. It must be a bad pump, unless I missed something.

im working on an 81 liquifire this evening, with the oil pump in a drill and the throttle control on it WOT how much oil should come out of the outlets it just kind of dribbles out a little once in awhile ,should i prime it better before i call it bad or is this about right ?? wade

As Jack says, they look the same, but they may not be driven the same way the Deere one is with the flexible drive key.
