Adjusted the timing today. Got lucky and got it right on the first try, so only had to pull the flywheel and stator once! .118" BTDC. Seems to run well, started on the first pull. (60' heated garage though). #2 carb still spits out a lot of gas in the overflow hose. I've adjusted the float lever as noted in the Mikuni manual to 23mm above the bowl gaskets. Inlet needle and seat is new from a rebuild kit. Needle length was the same as the old one, but I don't know if the old one was original. It's a 1.5. Any other suggestions?

Where does the return line opening on the small gas tank go? Is it supposed to hook up to the overflows from the carbs? Illustrations in my books just show a length of gas line laying on top of the tank. I'm considering getting a brass T fitting and connecting the carb overflow lines to the tank return. Is that OK? Big tank up front only has one line coming from it. That appears to be correct.

Any help here would be appreciated.

Thanks.

You shouldn't be getting that much fuel from those lines, they're vents, not overflows. There's something up with that carb.
I don't think I have anything hooked up to the second fitting on the 2 gallon. Are you planning on using both tanks? How, a valve?

Congratulations and good work saving that thing! There's nothing more gratifying than to hear a restored engine cry for the first time after you've given it all that TLC!

I plan on using the second tank. It came with valve attached to the right side of the console.

With that much fuel coming out, and it spits out the carb throat, I think it must be something with the inlet needle and seat, but I'm not sure what.

For some reason, the needles and seats in many of the rebuild kits are wrong.
They'll look correct, but they will have an incorrect installed height.
I don't know if that is your issue, but it sounds like it is not shutting off.

in the dk book there are 3 different needle/seat part numbers available all 1.5s with same threads look to be different installed heights .

so on my dator, the rear tank has two lines on to it i ASSUMED the standard tank was routed to the rear and then the the pump was fed by the rear tank , venting the rear tank through the front tank via the supply line thus the rear tank being nonevented :1 is this correct ,2 could the 295 be the same way this is the only way i could figure the sleds not having a valve on them please comment wade

Wade,
I wonder if you'd get the gas to move from the front tank to the back tank. Maybe if it's not vented. My gas cap on the rear tank is vented.

Anyone put new foam under the hood? Is so, did you have to cut out around the muffler so it wouldn't touch the muffler?

Well it's done! Took her out for a short test run today. Ran pretty good. Still some fine tuning to do of the carbs. Doggy at low speed. New pilot jets are on the way and I hope that helps. Just a few other touch ups to do, but we will be at Waconia!
