Re: crankshaft gear shim?
Hey nitro,
If you would please tell us what year and model sled you are working on, it would help us greatly in assisting you with your question. Since Deere used engines from 3 different manufacturers, this info is crutial!

Re: crankshaft gear shim?
sorry about that its a 81 lf like i said i didnt see it there when stripped it down and i always look for stuff to take off for reasons like this,so i called the shop they said it was on there so i checked manual and i didnt see one there it shows in order bearing, seal, gear, locking collar is under gear, the dude at shop i had work done said probaly could toss it out and it would run the same
Re: crankshaft gear shim?
JDParts.com Does not show a shim on the outside of the bearing, only on the inside of the bearing. Is it possible that it was on the inside of the bearing and it was not put back on when the bearing was installed? Here is a link to the exploded view. Make sure that there is a shim on the inside of the bearing. The shim is #15.

Re: crankshaft gear shim?
The shim goes on the end of the crankshaft against the gear. Don`t leave it out.

Re: crankshaft gear shim?
heres what i found out i went to vintagesnow and on the parts manual for 81 lf it shows on page 38. 2 shims behind the case bearing, i never seen one when i took it apart then when like i say i got back from shop it had one taped on the gear, when we filled case with 1.40 oz of 10-40 w oil then drop cover with oring on it on and it wouldnt go down flat to seal,i took the shim out and cover sat flat, so my qustion will this thing run the same with or without it? any info would be cool the engine is together ready to go in sled but im worried it will mess bearing up or gear on crank....kenny you on the boards? can any one pm me kenny's cell # i know hes up north i misplaced it...thanks
