Trailfire lost its zip!

Took a ride 425 mile ride this weekend and after it was all said and done it seemed like my 83 trailfire doesn't have the top speed it use to. Not just this weekend but over the course of this year. It use to always go AT LEAST 100km/hr but it seem like it's only doing about 90 today (Snow was a little wet too). Engine running great and i lube the primary clutch with chain wax for motorcycles so things don't wear out. With that being said I've also almost put on 5000 miles the last 2 1/2 years so maybe the cluthes need work anyways? Engine runs about 5900-6100 RPMs cruising at high speeds and maybe spikes to 6500 when i pin it off the line. Any recommendations to get my top speed back? Thanks Luke.

Maybe an engine re ring is needed? Is your compression still good?

Yeah I checked it, 135 on each.

If it was clutching, I'd think it'd be screamin but not moving..... Or is this what you're trying to tell us it's doing?

Try putting the secondary spring in the next hole to increase the tension....Maybe thats getting worn.

Deerefanatic, When I'm riding (wide open throttle/close to) it holds really steady at aprox. 6000 rpms which I thought was about right, maybe not? It seems to fly off the line and as it gets going faster, it seems like it just can't quite get up there like it should. I especially noticed it this weekend coming home, but it was warmer and the trails where a little wet. Luke

Hey Duane,

At end of the season I was going to swap the whole works out. I've got the suspension all set up and repainted and ready to go. I was going to break it down in the middle of the season but snowmobiling up north has been awesome this year for me. Maybe sooner if I can't get my top speed dilemma worked out. Wish I could have made it to Waconia this year but was too busy at work unfortunately at the end of Janurary. Luke.

427cobra, the secondary spring is more responsible for higher speed performance? Is that a fairly common occurrence and should I start looking for a new one? If I do this and it WASN'T necessary, what will it perform like. Thanks Luke
