Need Help with some cylinders
Need Help with some cylinders
I have a 1979 Trailfire. I have taken the stock cylinders and bored them 20 over. THen had to put a chrome lining back in. What is the function of this coatin inside the cylinders. I had to replace a piston this last weekend and found the cylinder lightly scratch. I re honed this cylinder and lost some of the coating? I guess what im asking is it possible to try and run on that cylinder till winter is over then rebuild the top end of that cylinder, and replace the jug? I just dont understand the chrom lining so if anyone knows. I could use some help from you.

If the rings run on the aluminum casting, it will tear the thing to shreds. Chrome is harder than aluminum and a chrome lining is lighter than a steel one. Did you actually chip away the chrome or did you just dull it? The chrome may not always shine like chrome accessories. If you chipped or peeled the chrome away, don't run it or you will not like the results. The best way to hone a chrome cylinder is with a ball (dingleberry) hone. 6 or 7 strokes is all it takes to break the glaze. If you use a gem (replaceable stone) hone, make sure you use the lightest available stones and only make 4 or 5 passes. The idea is to break the glaze not add diameter to the bore. You should be able to find nice used or NOS cylinders really cheap.

Re: Need Help with some cylinders
what price do cylinders usauly bring?
Re: Need Help with some cylinders
Seams that I saw some NOS 440 Deere jugs on ebay for $45.00.
That would be a great price.
Actually even $100 would be good. The PTO side usually fetches more.

I can get them NiCaSil'ed for around $250 each or chromed for about $275 each. It would be cheaper to buy NOS cylinders while there are a few left kicking around.

Re: Need Help with some cylinders
I'm not seeing where this says that it's either a 340 or 440, but I have a NOS pair of 340 cylinders and a single NOS 440 cylinder currently listed on ebay that ends Sunday, 3/6. The cylinders are item #'s 320495099354 and 320495102748.
