Cyclone Info/Help Needed

Hey Guys. I am in need of some information for my new '76 Cyclone project. A little background 1st...

I basically got 2 sleds + extra parts
-sled 1 is complete but rough with a 340 that supposedly runs.
-sled 2 is completely disassembled, it was a 440 sled and is in nice shape.
-sled 2 does not have an engine.

Question #1-I have a Kioritz 440/22 (ser# 3407243) engine that I got with a bunch of other stuff some time ago. I'm not sure what it came out of but it has a Merc recoil housing. Can the top end (heads, pistons & cylinders) from this engine be put on the Cyclone's 340/22 engine (ser# 74120618) ? If the swap can be done, is there anything that needs to be changed (i.e. timing, etc.).

Question #2-I was also reading that certain Arctic Cat rubber tracks could be put into this sled. What exactly would be involved in doing this swap and what do i need for parts. I have a '78 El Tigre 6000 with a good rubber track in my junkyard. Is this the track I need ? What drivers do I need to use ?

Question # 1, you can install the 340 top-end on the 440 bottom-end. The carb will have to rejetted for the 340.
Question # 2, I have heard the same thing, not sure which AC track but the measurements are 121" X 16" with a 2.52 drive lug pitch. No driver change is necessary. It would be advisable to use a drive shaft and rear idler with the center wheels.
The sleds in the picture both appear to be '76's, the serial # would confirm it. The left suspension is from a 76/77 Cyclone, the right suspension is from a 78. By modifying the tunnel, the 78 suspension can be used and you will get a smoother ride.
I see you have extra ski assemblies, do you want to see them?

Thanks for the info, especially on the skid ID. I was thinking it was for a '78 but wasn't 100% sure and yes you are correct both sleds are '76's (I checked the ser #'s). I want to swap the unknown KEC 440 top end onto the Cyclone 340 bottom end so I am assuming if you can go one way, you can go the other way also.

I don't want to sell anything just yet, thanks for the offer though.

This is what I was reading about the track swap...maybe Joe (or somebody) will jump in here and give me the lowdown.

ONe other difference between the 340 /440 is the chaincase gear ratio. They are slightly different.

another thought is if the 440 is a running engine theres no need to swap top ends you could swap some of the external parts and bolt the 440 right in. My 78 cyclone 340 has the engine from my 75 jdx8 in it [440/22] I needed to swap the exhaust manifold and the intake manifold intake was only because the x8 still used a walbro carb. The only issue you may have with a merc engine is if the wiring is different then a stator swap etd may be needed. If you are ok with swapping the complete unit you would still have basically a complete correct 340 to reinstall if you got into a serious resto.

The Merc 440 I have is not a running engine and has a points ignition. The sled I will be putting together (the disassembled one in pic) is an original 440 sled so I would actually putting it back to original. I am considering a dual carb setup from a Liquifire ...so much for original.

I was actually surprised/confused over the weekend when I pulled the Merc 440 off of the shelf to check compression. My Craftsman gage showed almost 200 psi on both cylinders . I tend to believe it as everthing else I own, that runs well, shows 130-155 psi with this gage. I am having a buddy stop over with his gage to verify it though.

I have all of the required parts for the conversion and had it in my sled to make sure it would work before I repainted the tunnel. It all fits and appears to move as it should, but you have less clearance between the track and tunnel. If you use an old ac track I dont think the el tigres used the one you will need until the mid 80's. Once an original ac track is found you have to change the d/s to a 80+ liquifire d/s to get the correct 3.29" pitch.
Will know more this next winter when the sled is hopefully completed. Also by looking at the idler wheels I am going to have to find taller ones for it due to the slide rails sitting down against the orig cleats vs. on top of clips in a rubber track.
