I was out at the minnedosa relic run this weekend and had some issues with the Massey. The motor was rebuilt in the spring after blowing a hole in the PTO side piston.
The temp was around 15 degrees F and I was running premium fuel at 50:1. There was a fair bit of soft snow on the ground. I noticed that after a wile the motor was running a bit hot (I think). The plugs looked great a coco colour. Towards the end i noticed that the duct work had come off the fan.
I know I am rambling a bit but I am afraid of burning the motor down again. The sled till starts well with a couple primes and runs good so I guess I didn't hurt it to much. I was wondering if the 50:1 is to lean, or if these motors just run a bit hot?

Re: Whirlwind running hot
Cuyuna's do run warmer than most. Good air flow is important above zero.
What plugs are you running?

RN3C, the front vent kept on plugging up every time I hit a drift so that wouldn't help things either.

Re: Whirlwind running hot
Well, I see two different recommendations for gas to oil ratio in the book I have. Cuyuna says 40:1, and Ski Whiz says 20:1. I would go with the 20:1 and both recommend premium gas.

She is trying her best to melt down again. I went for a ride on the weekend, the temp was around freezing so I added some more oil and set out. Got 5-7 miles and she was way to hot, limped back to the yard and had to resort to a 440 Everest for the rest of the day as the LF was being rode already.
I guess it is done for the year, next year I will have to try something different. Maybe colder plugs or turn up the carb? At least the LF is still running like a top.
