78CC Liquifire for 79

Post by S_Kyle »

I was reading a post over on the VS board, saying that for 79 the limit for the ICCSF was 340cc and 50hp. Back in 79 would you have been able to remove the restrictive y pipe from the 78 CC's to gain the 2-3 they detuned and still qualify to race.

The one machine I have seen that I know was raced in 79 still had the restrictive Y pipe in place.

Thanks
Scott

I thought the limit was 56 hp. Deere offered the kit starting with the 80 LF to change jugs and pistons to make it race legal.

The 56 hp and 440cc would have been for 80. I was talking about 78-79 season. As far as I know the limits for ICCSF went:

77/78 340 cc 45hp
78/79 340 cc 50hp
79/80 440 cc 56hp

Ok. I guess I was confusing years along with restrictions. I do remember guys driving 78CC's in 79 since Deere did not have an LF that year. This would be another great question for my former local JD sled mechanic since he raced and wrenched all of them. You had to catch him in the right mood to get much information, however.

I could be wrong about this, but I think I remember reading that the '78 Rule was actually +/- 45 HP, so the CC was probably actually set up on the plus side of 45 anyway.

Matt I think you were allowed +/- 10%, so the stock 340 LF would have qualified under the rules. So I assume that the CC would have been fairly close to the 45hp mark.

Hopefuly someone here has the answers.

As far as I know the Stock 340 Liquifire WAS NOT allowed under the 45HP +/- 10% rule.
I often wondered why as the std 76-78 Liquifire 340's were only rated 47 or 48 hp anyway weren't they??

Kenny and guys,

The 76 Liquifire was rated at 45 hp, while the 77-78's were rated at 47 I believe.

ICCSF's rules always made we wonder about 1978, since 45 hp +/- 10% would be +/- 4.5 hp giving a race legal range of 40.5 to 49.5 hp. So why the heck was the 47 hp 78 LF detuned down to 45? Beats me!

The Bates leathers I have from 1978 were worn by an independant Deere racer named Willie Richardson. He raced a 78 CC in both 78 and 79. It was the one Ron Sonnek restored a few years back. Wonder how many other guys raced them...
