I'm building a fire pit for the yard and had an epiphany. I could not decide where it should go in the yard, so why not make it portable.
I headed down to the local dump and picked up a tractor rim (looks IH 966 ish). took it to the tire shop in town and apparently they don't do tractor tires anymore. So I cut it off with a hatchet (worked better than you would think), and I have a tube to float down the river with. So now to the planning it bit. Since I want to move it and not kill the grass it needs legs and a bottom.
Question #1 How high off the ground should it be? I was think 10 -12 inches or so.
Question #2 How thick should the bottom be not to warp beyond recognition. I plan to build a rack to keep the fire off the bottom but obviously there will be ash and embers fall through wile the fire is going. I have a friend with a plasma table so it will be easy to get a perfect circle once I figure out how thick it should be. I was thinking that a bar or two on the underside could keep warping down to a reasonable level.
Thanks guys
Scott

Re: Fire pit
How about lining the bottom with fire brick? Might make it a little heavy if you're planning on moving it by hand.
