ADDING AN IFS TO A FIRE SERIES SLED

Post by flacker36 »

Along with my quest to add reverse to a fire series, I am also looking to add an IFS to one. My first thoughts are to use the IFS out of a yamaha srv, phazer or ovaition and modify from there. Has anyone tried this or have experience in this type of modification??

Any ideas would be great.

I've seen a couple with trailing arm setups, but I don't think I've seen any pogo sticks yet. (besides the factory one, of course)

Pogos have been done....

I think it was Ed Poets who had some pictures. Looked pretty good.

Sorry I dont have the pics...

Maybe Paul (danzig) has them...??

Joe,

Not to discourage you, but I don't recommend adding an IFS to a Deere...unless you are really, really going to do it right. IFS sleds are dirt cheap and very plentifal these days and the engineering teams put lots of developement time into them. I generally recommend leaving the Deere's stock and appricating them for what they are.

That said, if you are hell bent to do this, I have a few suggestions:
-Get a parts chassis and practice cutting it up before taking apart an otherwise usable sled
-figure out the suspension system you are going to use. IFS requires longer travel rear suspension, with improved damping.
-If you go with a trailing arm set up, you will need to figure out bump stear, camber gain, caster angle of the spindle, roll center, etc.
-If using struts, clutch clearance is an issue, as is the added mass and stearing linkage.

In all reality, I have yet to see a home made IFS sled that would out handle a stock Liquifire, or ride much better.

I hope this helps, and remember, this is just my opinion.

is there any way to get measurements from the IFS liquifire that was at waconia so the suspension could be reverse enginered?

Do you mean the strut Liquifire proto? or did I miss seeing a IFS one being there??

Kenny,

The only IFS Liquifire at Waconia was the strut sled.

jdsnowfire,

Trust me, it's been thought of...

Kenny, remember we got in sh!t for crossing the ropes to look at it and the CC skids. Luckily Kenny talked his way out of it, we were "with the John Deere guys".
