1976 cyclone 440
i have a i think 1976 cyclone 440 date is something/75 can't read the month anyways the problem i'm having is the sled will start but when going to take off acts like a rev. limiter is kicking in won't move.i took the belt off and tried to rev engine up but when it gets to about 3000 rpm's it will just rev up and down like a rev limiter is kicking in.i can hold throttle wide open and it will just sit there and go up and down as if a rev limiter is taking over.please anybody out there that can help me?
thanks,bob

I think it may be your cdi is starting to bad. To ck this ground out one cylinder and see if it changes RPM, if it doesn't that cyl is not firing. DO NOT just pull the spark plug wire off as that may ruin your cdi box. Make sure the spark plug wire can find a ground. There is no rev limiter in this sled.
Let us know what happens
PS this should be in the tech section. (i'm sure it will be moved there, No big deal)

Sounds like either your carbs is dirty or one cylinder is not firing. It may be your cdi may be going bad. To ck this ground out one cylinder while it is doing this to see if that is your problem. (don't just pull off the wire That may ruin your cdi box completely)

Fuel issues are the number one problem on all these vintage sleds. This has been talked about a great deal here in past posts. If you have good looking spark at both plugs, I would concentrate on the fuel system for now, starting at the tank, and working back to the carb. If you do not have good spark, you'll need to check the resistance of the stator, and go from there. There are FAQs here that cover most all these questions.
There are plenty of guys here that will help you get your sled going.

Rich,
A couple of things come to mind.
-a clogged exhaust pipe
-a clogged fuel filter
-one spark plug lost spark
-a bad cdi
I agree with you on the possiblity of bad crankseals. I would also not rule out a bad high speed winding in the stator. The stator is very easy to check, which is expained in the FAQ section.

Hey Rich
We probably kinda go in cycles here, depending on what has been the flavor of the week so to speak. But the cure is probably in there somewhere! And when you're mesing with an old machine, you pretty much have to check everything sooner or later.
At the age of these engines, I think a seal change ought to be done just so you know what you've got. At the risk of blowing the engine if the seals crap out unexpectedly, why not replace them, they're cheap as parts go.
I was oiling up the NOS crank I got from DK the other day, and as I was doing that, I took a close look at the outside seals. I guess you'd call them a double lip seal, but otherwise they are pretty unremarkable, a simple but important part on a 2 stroke.
As the list has pretty much went to sleep for the summer now, I've been surfing around the web a bit, just looking at some of the other sled forums. JDFANPA had warned me that there was a lot of lousey info passed on some of these lists, and it appears to me he is right! It seems to me, that we do a pretty good job of steering the guys with problems the right direction, after all, it is kinda tough to nail the problem on the head with the descriptions we sometimes get.
Hey Pat, check that last post, the FAG section? stop your're killing me!!

told ya Brian LOL.............Anyway my thoughts on this first its always good to verify you have proper compresion and spark with any old sled then move on to fuel issues................from what your saying seems you have the same symptoms with or without the belt on........now thats kinda odd usally if you have a week cylinder or a bad plug the engine will still rev up much better often seeming to be running fine with no belt simply because there is no load on the motor........it also seems strange that rpms are going up and down once it hits 3000
after you check for compresion and good spark you should check into the cdi and stator diagnosis harley has posted some good info on this in this section Im leaning towards a electical problem for sure

Brian,
Wow what A type-o. I hope I didn't offend anyone. Once I figured out what you were saying, I was laughing at myself for typing such a thing. I had a busy day and was tired.

I don't think anyone thought you were dissin anything, I certainly didn't.
We definitely all have our points of view that past experiences have formed.
Collectively, we are smarter I think, as points get brought up that we might have missed, sometimes even obvious ones.
I personally enjoy the interaction, and feel we all benefit from it, as it keeps the gray matter stimulated. It's easy to forget stuff you once knew, if you don't access the data base on a regular basis.

Thinking about your cyclone problem some more, the crankseals are a strong possiblity, BUT I would rule out all the easy stuff first starting with the ignition.
Check for spark using a inline spark tester available at most automotive stores. The tester shows spark under a load where as if you just check for spark by laying the plugs on the head is not as acurate. If you have lost spark in 1 plug,
check out the FAQ section on diganosing CDI problems on the Kioritz engine.

don't know if anyone brought this up yet with all of the postings, but my 77 liquifire would rev up to 3000 rpm when i first got it, put in a new stator and now it runs awesome. also had the same exact promblem with my 76 cyclone; once i put a good cdi box on it. good luck getting a stator though if it is bad.
