Yamaha Help

Post by jdsledsrgr8 »

My sister's future brother in law has a lake home in Illinois. He knows that I am into snowmobiles so he said to me we have 6 snowmobiles at our lake home and it would be great if you could fix up one of them to ride around the lake. We have not drove them for 5-6 years. So here I am at the lake home. Here is what they have

Phazer II LE serial 8BG-007887
Exciter L/C serial 82M....?
VMax serial 81K-000843
Excel III serial 977-121944
Enticer Deluxe serial 8J9-0469681
Excel V serial 8K1-004655

So I am heading back to Wisconsin tomorrow and I thought I would take one of them back with me to fix up and get running. But I thought I might as well spend my time on a sled worth the time. All of them look in good shape. So do you have any suggestions on which one I take home to fix up??

Thanks for your quick reply

I have had several Yamaha Enticer and Excel's in my hands over the years. They are very well built, easy to work on, parts are readily available and they have great resale value.

The Enticer Deluxe was built around 83 give or take a couple of years. It came with electric start and is a very good looking machine.
The Excel III is a little more rare and is gold in color. Made around 85 and very collectable. Same bullet proof 340 engine.
The Excel V is a unique model built only in 79 and 80. Very low numbers and the most expensive model Yamaha had in those years. It has a 540 engine and is a touring model.

I belive the V-Max is a 4 cylinder which makes it a good machine as the market is hot for them.
I have never touched a Phaser or L/C Exciter but if I am right they are in demand also.

I have had 2 Phazers in my tenure. They have a 485 cc fan powerplant, dual 32 mm butterfly carbs, and are a very dependable machine. The Phazer II LE has electric start which tends to make it desireable for women to operate. The only drawback for a Phazer is it's top - heavy nature due to a high center of gravity that Yamaha tried to overcome via widening the ski stance twice in it's production. The Exciter is the same basic platform as the Phazer but with the 569cc LC mill under the hood. A friend of mine had a Phazer, traded for an Exciter, was disappointed in the increased weight and clumsiness, and traded right back to a Phazer.

It would be worth your effort to get all those sleds up and running.

Thanks guys for the insight. As it turns out I did not bring one home, little bit too late of a night and the next morning the hangover and the thought of loading up a sled did not match up. So next trip down I will make an effort to grab one. I will pass your information onto my future brother in law. I think at this point they are just sitting outside a good bet would be to sell them off and use the money to buy a new model. They are not snowmobile people; they only like to have a couple to ride around the lake. These snowmobiles are still in good enough shape they would be worth some money to a vintage guy

Have they been parked outside for the estimated 5 - 6 years?
The VMAX could be several things other than the 4 cylinder setup because Yamaha used that name many times over the years.
