Identify this please
Re: Identify this please
We still have a white 5 speed in the family. My Mom still rides it occasionally. The tires and tubes have been replaced over the years but I can't remember having any other problems with it. Just pump up the tires every year and away you go.

Re: Identify this please
After seeing this ad, I'm trying to imagine what the JD marketing team (you know, the ones that target farmers, construction, & landscapers) thought when they were asked to put this ad campaign together.
We're going to market to...yuppies?

Re: Identify this please
In some way though it wouldn't have been that much different a reaction than when the marketing team was told they were going to market snowmobiles. Both the snowmobiles and bikes were recreational products. It would have been a lot easier for them to understand selling lawn & garden equipment. Using the same brand of equipment you used at work or on the farm to do work on your lawn & garden would seem like a natural extension. Building recreational products to play with when the work was finished was a whole different market and probably part of the reason they got out of both the bikes and snowmobiles.

They had visions of being all things to everyone, just like International Harvester.

It's a shame they didn't make fridges. I am trying to get an old IH fridge off a friend that still runs like a champ.

Re: Identify this please
Thanks guys for the help on the base plate. I guess I only have a few hundred more parts to locate and I can have a dator too.
As for JD bikes I was approached by a friend of the family that has a pair of bikes in the shed. I believe there is a women's and a unisex (white and yellow?). He sold the blue men's a few years ago. If anyone has interest in a pair of bikes let me know and I can get more info.

Re: Identify this please
I had one of those bicycles when I was a kid...we came across it at a garage sale. I'll put my masculinity on the line and say it was the white bike in the middle (being held by the blonde). Actually it was considered a 'universal frame' bike. I've seen a few others here and there. Auctions, garage sales and flea markets. Can be found cheap..$20 or so...real values probably depend on the bike. More or less a novelty to collect I think.
I knew Deere sold bicycles a long time ago and I couldn't remember how far back. I found it here .... http://www.mindspring.com/~dagmara/deere.html
Late 1800's and then from 1973-1975

Re: Identify this please
I have an IH refrigerator in the shop and just did the annual defrosting ritual last week. It runs well after almost 60 years but when the freezer door is frosted over so badly it won't open, defrosting is due.
