Re: Needed badly !!
Rob,
I the original long ones are very hard to find 15 years ago I bought one locally and found the other one at Image. Back then they were just about impossible to find. This summer I tried to get another set from Image and Bob told me "it wasn't going to happen". He has been out of them for quite awhile. I used genuine mikuni flanges # vm38/200. Also I ditched the 5-plate fuel pump and used a genuine mikuni DF52-73.
For years I have struggled with installing / removing the air box on the other sled. Personally I think Deere originally designed the sled for the shorter flanges. The air box bolt just happens to line up perfectly with the hole that is in the exact middle of the tunnel tab and the air box comes out without too much effort. I have to remove the fuel tank to get the air box out of the sled with the long flanges. Also the mag side carb will sit on the steering post with the long flanges.
Here are a few pictures of how it looks.

This sled hasn't hit the snow yet but it runs very well in the shop. Also, my feeling is that I would rather use the last remaining long flanges on an 84 instead of an 80. I'm so happy with how this turned out. This is the way these should have been built.

Re: Needed badly !!
Nick is right the longer original flanges suck!! Stick with the short mikuni ones it makes airbox removal a lot easier!!

Re: Needed badly !!
I've been wondering why Deere used the longer flanges? It seems really odd that, with the short flanges the threaded insert in the air box just happens to line up with the hole in the exact middle of the tunnel tab.
This makes me think initially the sled was designed with the short flanges, and then they changed to longer flanges late in the design process.

Rob,
I have a set of the long adapters. Don't remember the condition though, so I will need to take a look at them. Let me know if you are interested, and I will dig them out.

Re: Needed badly !!
I have been using the short flanges on my 82 for several years but still have the long ones on my other LF's. I finally got tired of the wrestling match every time I needed to pull the carbs on my 82. It does keep the carb off the steering shaft; I had to JB weld a carb mixing bowl once on an 80 because it had worn a hole due to years of contact and gas started to leak out. It may sound crazy, but some individual sleds are worse than others for getting the pieces in and out. I have considered setting up a fixed fastener arrangement for the fuel tank to avoid cutting rivets every time the fuel tank needs to be pulled to get at the carbs.

Re: Needed badly !!
It has to do with crankcase volume and compression. My guess is the longer boots worked better with the lower compression domes. Peter

Should we who use the shorter flanges be concerned about anything?

No. I always used them. Airbox is a pain.

I always thought another half an inch of clearance anywhere in there would eliminate a bunch of grief.
