Only 8 finishers, which is too bad. I saw one guy absolutely buried in cattails. Tough temps today, and the route looked pretty beat up in places. Kudos to those that ran - I'm sure there will be many more next year! (Wanted - race prepped ElTigre CC)

Anyone know what happened to Chuck? Last I heard he was still running at the second gas stop.

Congratulations to all the guys who made the effort to put a sled in the race. I'm a little surprised only 8 finished and would love to hear what the tech issues were. A 75% attrition rate seems pretty high, although there were a lot of DNF in the 70's races too. I guess why should todays race be any different if you are using the same sleds? So what did we learn? Is new engineering needed to keep these sleds together for 180 miles? or better prep (more ditch time) and better luck the ticket? There was a ton of experience in this race and yet only 8 finished...how do we improve on that number?

Congrats again guys. Hopefully your efforts will show there is genuine interest in this race and they will be able to offer it next year too.

Jon Carlson blew a brand new radiator
Tom Otte had a complete engine burn down
Joe Rainville blew out the headgaskets
Doug Oster had electrical problems

Overnight temps were around -28. Temp at start time was somewhere around -20. Slight wind from the north but enough to add to the windchill. Clear skies and sunshine so visibility was good, except for the snow fog from the sleds.

120 new sleds took off first before the vintage riders, they left one at a time, 20 seconds apart. By the time the vintage riders took off, the trail went from rough to brutal. Lot's of moguls and some huge holes just in front of approaches and intersections where the big sleds hit the gas and dug out holes. There were three legs of about 60 miles each with a fuel stop between each leg. I'm surprised that the vintage sleds made it to the fuel stop without running out of gas, although the pit crew could place a 2 gal can of gas along the way to be sure the sled made it to the fuel stop. I saw some cans out, but don't know who was using them.

Look at the times registered below. The first back in the pro class was 2 hours and 47 minutes and the fastest time in the vintage was 3 hours and 51 minutes. Big difference. We were driving down the highway at about 60 in the van and was passed once by a vintage, so they were still able to get out and run once in awhile. In fact, a couple of the new sleds were passed by a couple of vintage sleds. The last to finish in the vintage was 5 hours 29 minutes. Big spread between times. Watching some of them, they were definitely taking a beating. I talked to Joey Potucek after the race. He's a young big guy. He said he was really sore all over and said he works out regularly. I can't believe how well Brian did. He must really be hurting this morning!

The ElTigre CC Cats really made a showing yesterday. Bigger suspension than the Deere's was probably a big difference. 8 sleds finishing out of 35 probably isn't too bad. We were guessing that only about 10% would make it. There were about 10% of the new sleds didn't finish either. Last I heard on the radio was 15 I think.

Congrats to all who entered the vintage and especially congrats to those who finished! My back, shoulders and legs were aching from just watching you guys! Good job to all!

What I'm hearing is that Chuck was DQed at the last fuel stop. He wasn't going to finish in time.

Not trying to start a war but I think you Deere guys need to set ole Boy Wonder straight about a Deere not finishing. I'm not a member over there or I would post something:

just got home from dropping off "grumpy"(rainville's name for kenny hiens) and wade bennett at his truck to head back home from kenny's cabin. got some great and funny stories to share and some great photos. just not now to tried and still cold!
