tested the stator and here is what I found not really sure which wire goes to which coil or exactly how to read an ohm meter but here are the results

white plug:wht wire-2.8 on 2k setting
blk wire-78.8 on 200 setting

blk plug: blk wire-16.2 on 20k setting
wht wire-15.8 on 20 k setting

blk plug: red wire-.22 on 20k setting

the setting refers to where the dial was set on the ohm meter

also I posted this on another forum and someone mentioned about making marks on the clutch and using a timing light to ensure that each plug was firing at tdc and not firing twice per cycle

one plug was working correctly the other was firing at bdc and occasionally at tdc

thats how my 78 acts !! that would make me think its the cdi or a bad ground ... maybe the timing ring ?? something causing the cdi to fire 180 out on one side ??? hmmm

There is no '77 X8. If '75, then yes, but I'd highly recommend getting a new Hewtech, rather then switching to another box that may fail at any moment.

I probably will order one from hewtech seems to have good service plan but before I lay down $ 150 I'd like to be sure

also does anyone which wire would hook to whick because the harnesses are different the main question is that there are 2 wht and 2 blk wires

I can use the chart on hewtch site to figure most of it out but not positive about the 2 wht and 2 blk

I just installed one of Hewtech's Fireplug CDI boxes and one of his rewound stators on my 340/S. So far I'm very happy with the results. Money well spent! On their website is a wiring diagram for the "A" style Prestolites with Ohm (resistance) readings for each wire. From that you should be able to tell where the wires go.

Good Luck,

My 295/s was spitting alot of gas back out of the carbs. My problem was that I did not have the choke plungers set correctely. If the choke plungers aren't seated or the rubber tips on the plungers are worn and not seating it may be causing your misting issue with the PTO side carb. It also caused me to be rich all the time because the chokes were allowing additional gas into the engine. Just something to double check.

What size main jets are you running?

I will look into the carbs and see exactly what they have in them I am not sure I also will try to find out what they are supposed to have in them as far as cutaway, needle, pilot size, and needle jet just to be sure someone may have switch them over the years of it sitting

do the needle jet come out or are they pressed in

thanks for mentioning the choke I may be barking up the wrong tree with the electrical but once I get something set in my head...

The 295/s carburetors should have these factory settings:
Mag side: Stamped MKA
160 Main jet
40 Pilot jet
2.5 Throttle valve
P-O Needle jet
6DH3 Needle valve
PTO side: Stamped JD 295
Internals are the same except for using a 190 main jet.

If everything matches up in your carburetors and you have verified that your choke plungers are good and are seating and you are still running rich and spitting gas back out the carbs, I'd try dropping pilot jet sizes.
