Air Silencers
Air Silencers
I have a '76 liquifire 440. I was reading in an old repair manual that these sleds were made with an air silencer that hooked onto the carburetors like an air intake. The book says that running a sled without one will make it run lean and can be risky. I've never had one on mine and just wondered if anyone had any information on them. Do I really need to use one? If I don't, do I need to use richer jets in my carbs? If I do need one, where can I get one, or can I make one? If anyone knows much about these I would appreciate the information.

Air Silencers
Cyclestud,
The factory service manual states the same warning of running lean without the airbox. I am not sure of the scientific explaination but the factory jetting specs are setup with the airbox installed. The airbox serves serveral purposes:
slight restriction of air for proper jet metering
intake noise silencer
catch pan for gas spit-back from the carb
