Tucker's 78 Cyclone

Post by jd_decalguy »

Ok guys this is what has been keeping Kenny in Minnesota for the whole spring. we have been putting together tuckers 78 Cyclone. No fancy paint, since it is going to be rode, just a lot of cool mechanical stuff. it has a newer track and skid, fitted with adjustibility to get it just right when we test it. dual carbs to let it breath better. cross country bars, and juice brakes. also so the skies don't cause any problems they have been set up like the ones kenny ran on his I-500 sled. both of the clutches have been completely rebuilt with some changes made to the springs and weights to get it right for the motor. i thought that it was time to let you guys see what we have been up to since it is starting to take shape.

Brian,

The skid came out of a early tx-l indy 80 to 83. we have all the measurements to make it work it is some what involved to do this change over. best to call to try to explain.

Very Nice!

Looks REALLY similar to a sled I have in my garage. That suspension upgrade looks tempting!!

What jetting did you decide to go with?

That is an inspiring setup. Having never actually seen anyone work on fine tuning a snowmobile before (or even fixing one), the photobucket series looks great.

What's the brake off of?

And what brand of fuel filters are those?

And would lowering the factory skid in the tunnel like you've done improve deep snow capabilities on other machines?
1979 Trailfire 440, dad bought from Steinbach, MB JD dealership in 1980 with 1,200 mile and an aluminum tunnel on it, regular rider, 5,055 miles
1980 Trailfire 340, bought in 2008 with TA440A-C202 engine in it, regular rider, 6,250 miles, LF rubber track
1979 Trailfire 340, bought in 2009, in pieces and rough cosmetic shape, 440 cylinders ready to go in (need pistons still), no odometer

i can build you this skid up grade for a grand. would include new drivers on drive shaft, skid, track, mounting plates, measurements, and brake setup. would include new bearings, shocks, hyfax, brake pads, rebuilt skid, and a good used track.

jetting is stock to a 340 liquifire for now until we can test.

brake is polaris.
fuel filters are nos john deere.
the skid is not factory deere, and ride height is set so the sled will handle to its top potential.

Great work! I'm very interested in your project sense I'm working on a 76 440 dual carb set up. All stock now except for dual carbs and 340 gears. I used a laser temp guage to jet my carbs and if I remember right pto 220 mag 200. Was a little on the fat side at lower speeds loved going 60-65 all day! Keep up the great work! Dave

I Personally want to thank Chris for the use of his shop & all the help he & Terry were in getting this project up & running. I'm positive that next winter when we start testing we will be pleasantly surprised with the results of the hard work we did, you know, the Coffee breaks, Lunches, BS sessions, & mental fortitude that went into this project..
Thanks again to my adopted step-son Chris & Adopted Brother Terry..
