leaky headgaskets

Post by kenv56 »

Okay I was just wondering if there is anything special you have to do when replaceing head gaskets on a 1989 440 liquifire. Reason I ask is because I just did head gaskets on mine, and it still leaks.
I cleaned the heads up real good checked them for flatness and torqued them to 18 ft/lb with a good snap-on torque wrench.

I was just thinking mabey i got bad headgaskets. they were winderosa ones.
Or I just put them on dry is there any coating your supposed to use?

The torque spec on the heads is 16 ft/lb, not 18. I am not sure what the extra 2ft/lb would do, but I have a set of Liquifire jugs that were overtorqued in which the studs were pulled up causing the area around the studs to be pulled up also, thus creating high spots barely detectable around the studs. When the studs were removed, the high spots around the stud holes were evident. You torqued in a crisscross pattern too?

The Winderosa head gaskets for the Liquifire are junk in my opinion. Others on here have mentioned Cometic gaskets in the past; I am not famliar with the Cometic gaskets though. I recently got my hands on a set of original Kawasaki/Deere headgaskets- the two-piece units with the separate ring for the combustion chamber. These were much easier to seal up than the Winderosa gaskets. The Winderosa's seem to require everything be better than perfect, along with a liberal coating of gasket sealer, such as Permatex's Copper Spray-A-Gasket, and a dose of good luck.

I had the same problem with my liquifire when I rebuilt the top end of the motor. After going through 2 sets of head gaskets, I took the cylinders and heads to a machine shop and had them both checked for warpage. The cylinder decks were slightly raised where the studs were and the heads were also slightly warped. I had them both trued up. When I reassembled the motor, I used genuine JD/kawasaki gaskets and used yamabond on the stud washers. Ever since then, I haven't had any leaks. Your best bet may be to do the same. Just my 2 cents.

This topic was also discussed earlier this year:

Perhaps this should be another FAQ topic as it comes up somewhat regularly.
