One very dirty Dator motor

Post by 80spitfire »

Now that I know my Dator motor will run again since I located a new connecting rod, I decided to take a look at the cylinders tonight. The most I had looked at the before was just to see if the ports were damaged from the ring catching and or scoring on the walls from the before mentioned. Tonight I threw it up on the bench under some lights and holy crap was that thing dirty inside. The cooling passages were almost completely plugged with dirt. I guess that's what happens when a motor sits apart in a barn since 85 huh lol It cleaned up pretty good once I started scraping it out. The picture I posted is of all the dirt on my bench after scraping them out. I also thought I'd show you guys a picture of the combustion chamber damage from the ring catching. It's pretty rough but I think it should be okay with a little cleaning with a sanding disc. There was one question I had for you guys though, do any of you know what the stock bore size on the Dator motor was? I don't know what size pistons they had in it so I just want to make sure my .10 overs will work and I need to know what to tell the machine shop to bore them out to. So basically what the bore size be on a .10 over? I think I'm gonna rack up a pretty good bill at the machine shop with this motor since I also want them to level of the head so that I don't end up with a crappy seal on the head and lean this thing out the first time I run it.

Your best bet is to take the pistons to the machine shop and have them measure the pistons and fit the bores to them.

I would take the cyl. & head to a engine re-builder & have them cook those parts out in there cooker so you make sure that all that gunk gets cooked out of the water jackets, you sure don't want any little pieces of that stuff coming loose & floating through the cooling system..

Yeah I think that may be money well spent to have them cook it. Because I have no clue how to get it all out any other way.

Well you maybe could use a high pressure washer ( or car wash ) but if it doesn't get it all where a cooker might or should, It's not worth the chance of something getting into the water pump or thermostat & burning down the engine again..

I think I'll just bite the bullet and have it cooked. Like you said it's not worth having it burn down form that. What a crappy way to burn a motor down!
