Dator secondary clutch opinions (Updated)

Post by 80spitfire »

Hey guys,
I dug in to my Dator secondary today and as I remembered it was pretty rough. The face of the fixed has a bunch of rust on it and both sheaves have rust as well. It does come of pretty easy though and leaves the surface suprisingly smooth. So my question is what you guys think I should do? Should I try to save it by sanding it down good with a DA or should I just forget about it and buy a new one since they're really easy to find? I'd like to keep the original one since it's the one that came on the sled if you guys think I can. Also is it's ok to paint the sheaves right or do I have to have it plated? My other sleds secondarys have always been so nice I've never had to paint them so I just wanted to check to make sure.

Thanks,
Brian

DO NOT PAINT OR PLATE as the paint or plating might hold in heat.. I would just sand the rust off, IF it's pitted a little that shouldn't be too much of a concern as you probably won't be riding this sled very much. AT the most the pits might cause a little more or faster belt wear.

On painting the suspension I believe the rails & the rest of the suspension ( except the inner part of all the wheels ) were painted Blitz Black or a semi gloss black if you prefer.

Me and Rich talked about it tonight and that's pretty much the same thing he said. So I'm just gonna sand down the inside and paint the outside with some 1000 degree paint so that it doesn't rust on the face again. Thanks for all the help with info on the clutchs Kenny. I've never really had to mess with the clutchs in my other restorations and I always wished that I knew a little more what I was doing with them. I'm definitely learning a thing or to about them with this Dator.

Well, I got the secondary all repainted, rebuilt, and put back togethor. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out and I was really happy that I was able to save the original one. ImageImage
