Q for anyone who has bought a Sno-stuff Fire windshied
I'm trying to figure out which Trailfire/Sportfire/Liquifire windshields are which in the Sno-Stuff listings.
450-706 is supposed to replace AM54823 and should be 15" high, but that JD number doesn't show up in JDparts. They list it for '79 Trailfire only.
450-708 is supposed to replace AM55084 and should be 16.5" high. This JD number shows up as "Cross Country" style for fire series. Sno-stuff lists this as correct for all 80+ fire series.
The way I'm interpreting this, the 706 is actually the correct mid-height shield for all Liq/Sport, and the 711 is the tall version that came on some (all?) Trailfires.
Am I correct?

Matt, if I remember correctly, one has the center tab in the front and one doesn't as far as a listing for '79 only. The 15" windshield is the one that I normally use and it has a center tab. There is no flaring on the sides like the JD ones were but, it looks OK and isn't too high. The 15" one is the one that I normally rotate through my sleds. the CC windshield is just about as high as the Sprint/Snowfire windshields were and in my opinion is an eyesore but it does serve a purpose. The taller ones tend to bend over and higher speeds because Sno-Stuff and Kimpex don't roll the tops of their windshields like Deere did. That roll was what prevented them from flexing. I sent in an original mid-height to Jeff at Cannon so he could re-pop it for a couple of guys for the HOF ride. He may have these available. I saw his 1-off when he gave my original back at Elk River last year. It looks nice.

We currently carry the sno-stuff windshields. 15" sounds short... unless you are measuring completely vertical. If I lay a measuring tape from the top to the tabs on the front of the windshield, I get approximately 18".

The best ones I have found are the polycarbonate low ones from Kimpex. The softer "uvex" ones sold by SnoStuff are not well liked at all. Even the shorter ones fold down in the middle and warp. I have a low one made by Jeff Haugen of Cannon Classics, and it's pretty nice, and fit OK. The one I ran on my I-500 sled is actually a mid-hieght Trailfire unit, but I would love to find a high quality "Cross Country" one with the side flairs. Darn cold at -20 and 60 mph.

To clarify, the reason I'm asking is so I can have correct application information on Newbreedparts.com. I like the Cannon windshields as well, but some people prefer a lower-cost alternative. I'll look into the Kimpex ones too - I didn't know they would be a higher quality then the Sno-stuff.

Two thumbs up for Cannon's shields, closest to NOS as you are going to find when the application calls for it.
For your every day riders where cost is important Kimpex shields are twice the product of Sno-stuff. That said Sno-stuff makes plenty of other parts that fit and function great. I think it is great NewBreed has access to different manufacturers that help keep our sleds on the trail.

I have one of the kimpex 06-708 cross country style windshields here’s a summary of my opinion about it
Pros
Blocks the wind well
Made of very thick (rigid) material
I haven’t noticed it flex at high speeds
Cons
Just plain ugly
Handlebars hit the windshield slightly when turning hard in either direction
There is about 1 inch that overhangs past the tabs closest to the driver cracks have started in this area.
This windshield has three tabs across the front (had to remove one for the 80 LF’s) and measures 18” vertically from the hood to the top of the windshield. Here’s a picture for reference.

I also have a Cannon “sport style” (83+) and a factory “sport style” 80-82. I just like the look of the low windshields. They make the sleds look faster.

After checking around, it doesn't appear the Kimpex windshields are available any more. Dennis Kirk shows one of the tall ones, but no listing for the standard, so there may just be some leftovers around.
