79 Trailfire 340 vs 440 parts

Post by grasscutter97 »

I know I'm adding to an old topic...but here goes.

I have attempted to rebuild my own comet 102's. DON'T. Unless you have extreme patience (the red lock tight will kill you & most folks don't have enough pipe to make a long enough extension for the ratchet). Then you need to have on hand any and all parts that need replacing. Pins, cams, spider, center bearing, etc.

So, I gave up and sent in 2 clutches to Image. Sure I paid a few bucks!!, but I had them build one stock weighted (both for my 80 TF 440), and one with the correct weights/springs for high altitude. I travel to see my brother in CO fregquently and now am able to bring my TF and ride (I also jetted a spare carb with high alt specs). Bolt both on and go. Its awesome. I've attempted riding at 10K+, and it doesn't work with these old JD's unless you are jetted/clutched for it. If you are set up right, they run all day. I had to stick to the trails, but rode with no problems for 3 days. Plan on doing it again this year.

THe other thing I noticed after getting my 102 rebuilt, was just how far gone it was before sending it in to Bob @ Image. I thought it still worked fine. Huge difference!! Smooth, Smooth, Smooth. Worth every penny. I plan on sending him 2 more this year for my Liquifires!
