JDM-113 Starter Spring Winding tool

Hi,

80spitfire's post with the collection of NOS tools and parts reminded me of something I have been looking for. Does anyone have a JDM-113 spring winder for the Kawasaki powered sleds they would be willing to part with? Alternatively does anyone know of a good alternative? Everything I have come up with seems to be for small engines, chain saws etc. I have heard on another board that some have made some homemade winders that work ok too. I have had to wind the springs by hand before and it's not fun.

I wish I could help you find one but that was the first I've ever come across that I was able to buy. I'm glad I found them though because like you said winding those things by hand is definitely not a fun time. Pretty sketchy really lol

80spitfire, that collection of NOS parts you came across is pretty impressive. I have been looking around for some kind of spring winder tool and was going to post here and see what would turn up. Seeing what you found got me moving on it, I wasn't sure if you were going to sell any of what you have found so I thought I would just make it a general post. I have seen the odd spring winder show up on ebay once in a while, but nothing lately. The ignition tester is a neat item too. Someone had one on ebay a while back and it went for quite a bit. It was amazing how many showed up for sale on ebay after the first one sold.

Yeah a very good friend of mine really hooked me up this time. I've been looking for those tools and as soon as some came available I sent a paypal right away lol It was quite the bill but they're not exactly making any of those parts or tools anymore...

You're talking about the recoil spring right? I just did mine the other day with with the method of putting a nail in your bench and hooking the spring to it, then using the recoil part to wind it up and using a zip tie to hold it tight. Might be completely different for your sled though... I'm new to John Deeres.

That's a pretty clever way to do it. I never thought to try it like that. Those tools though sure make it easy and safe.

Guys do come up with some good ways of dealing with these springs. If you've ever done one by hand you quickly come to appreciate how much energy is in one of these springs under tension. When you have one fully wound in your hands you want to get a zip tie or some locking pliers on it fast. You wonder how long you can hold on to it, but the idea of letting it go is pretty scary.
