So far I'm planning on being there, for years my dad and i have been talking about going up, but something always seems to come up that weekend and we can't make it. I'm really looking forward to making it, and looking forward to bringing the trailfire along.

At first I was hoping the sleds would co-operate this year. Now I'm hoping the weather is going to co-operate! :thinksnow:

Here's a recent account of a day ( or night ) of a groomer operator.

Dumb & Dumber were out riding last night on two newer Ski Doos. Groomer Joe was in a hair-pin turn last night with the groomer when Dumb came along at a high rate of speed and plowed into the side of the drag. Dumber came along at the same rate of speed and plowed into the back of Dumb. Groomer Joe got out to see if they were OK, which evidently they were, but their sleds - not so much. However, their sleds were rideable, so they refused help and the offer to call the authorities to make out a report. Oh ya, I forgot to say that they were quite obviously extremely intoxicated. Groomer Joe called Vilas County anyway to report the incident!!!

Just saw the weather for southern WI and a system is coming in this weekend that could bring a couple inches hopefully it makes it way north and picks up some more moisture from the lake. As of 3 weeks ago it was pretty decent, hopefully the next 2 weeks see some snow and colder temps.

I just got back from St GERMAINE. Trails are virtually unrideable--I mean you can still ride but just like last season it's really BAD !!! Still time though--lets hope a big snow or at least several smaller ones come through before then.

We just came thru Eagle River from Twin Lakes Michigan on friday and the trails were actually covered from what we saw even in town. Not saying they were able to groom them but if they would close them till more snow we might have a shot at riding this year. 15 day out look is calling for a couple inches tuesday or wednesday. If you are looking for good snow you have to get north of lake Gogebic and stay off of the Bill Nicholas trail and do all the side trails. :needsnow:

Here is a first hand report from Dan Larson, who was riding in the Gogebic area this last weekend. Dan has ridden the VC with us a couple of times ( he's a Cat guy ). He's from MN, but his wife was originally from the western UP.
Sounds like Brad's comments above were spot on:

The snow was getting thin on the trails as the weekend wore on and the temps hit the high 30’s & even into the forty’s today. They were grooming though each night so they were at least smooth to start out the day and the thin areas covered back up.

Off-trail of course in the logging roads the snow was deep and plentiful. If you jumped off the sled, which I actually did once, I went up to almost my waist!!

We had a few mechanical issues, one on each of the 3 sleds, so we didn’t get in as much riding as we would have liked, but that’s how it usually goes on the first run of the season.

I can’t wait to get back up there this weekend without the kids to bomb around in more of the back areas. Off course we got the sleds stuck several times, both getting our trail from the house to Sunday Lake and on some of the logging roads. If you slip off the side you better hit the hammer an pull hard back onto the road or you are stuck. Teresa & I each dropped in & got’r stuck.

The current forecast for the Gogebic area, is for much cooler temps, and chances for light snow.

The current trail reports from Sayner indicate lots of bare ground. They will have to receive fresh snow for us to ride in that area from what it sounds. If the lower temps hold, it sounds like lake riding, or trailering further north, and we have done both in the past. We'll have a good time no matter what.

I just called the Hall, and they did get about 2" of freash snow last night. They say the towns are messy, but the trails in the woods are holding up. I am making the treck no matter, and the temps look to stay cold on the extended forcast.

With no snow in Thief River Falls, the Challenge my be the only chance I get to ride my I-500 sled this year... :letitsnow: :letitsnow: :letitsnow:

Cari and I will arrive at the HOF Thursday afternoon. Look forward to seeing you guys up there. Even Linder.
